The New York Islanders<\/a> are in postseason position with four games remaining in the NHL<\/a> season.<\/p>\n

But with three wins in 10 games and four teams nipping at their heels, the Islanders made a major move.<\/p>\n

Consequently, New York fired head coach Patrick Roy on Sunday, April 5, and replaced him with longtime head coach Peter DeBoer. SNY announced the move<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n

Roy, a Hall of Fame goaltender, was in his third season as the Islanders\u2019 coach after three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche. He turned in a 97-78-22 record with New York.<\/p>\n

DeBoer, 57, served as an assistant coach for silver-medal-winning Team Canada in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. He coached for five teams \u2014 the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars \u2014 during an 18-year NHL coaching career.<\/p>\n

Though he has never won a Stanley Cup, DeBoer won conference crowns with the 2012 New Jersey Devils and 2016 San Jose Sharks. His 97 playoff wins are the most for a coach who has yet to win a Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n

The Dallas Stars fired DeBoer after the 2024-25 season despite advancing to the Western Conference Final each year.<\/p>\n

The coaching change comes at an opportune time for the Islanders. They don\u2019t play again until Thursday, April 9, at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s 4-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes was New York\u2019s fourth in a row.<\/p>\n

The Islanders are in third place in the Eastern Conference\u2019s Metropolitan Division with 89 points. Unfortunately for them, the Isles have played the most games in the conference.<\/p>\n

That means there is a chance one or more of the four teams with 88 points will pass New York. The teams with 88 points are the Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers, both in the Metropolitan Division, as well as the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The New York Islanders are in postseason position with four games remaining in the NHL season.
