In total, Martone had 14 shots following his second game on Thursday night against Detroit. It was only a matter of time before that first goal was coming.

The 19-year-old picked a great time for it. Martone’s first NHL goal was the overtime winner, as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

The Flyers jumped out to the lead just 4:19 into the game. Martone made a nice touch pass along the wall to spring a two-on-one that was finished off by Christian Dvorak for his 17th goal of the season.

Both teams managed 11 shots on goal in the second period, which featured no goals. The Flyers had three power plays in the period.

Just 35 seconds into the third, the Bruins tied the game with a power-play goal. David Pastrnak‘s shot hit Dan Vladar‘s glove and went just wide, but Casey Mittelstadt got the puck back in front for Pavel Zacha to clean it up for his 29th goal of the season.

In overtime, the Flyers drew two penalties within seven seconds to get a 5-on-3. That’s where Martone ended it with his first NHL goal at 2:31 to give the Flyers the win.

Box Score1st Period2nd Period3rd PeriodBOS Pavel Zacha (29) PP (Casey Mittelstadt, David Pastrnak) 0:35OvertimeBy the NumbersShots: Flyers: 31, Bruins: 19Power Play: Flyers: 1-for-5, Bruins: 1-for-1Faceoffs: Flyers: 59.3%, Bruins: 40.7%Goalies: PHI Dan Vladar: 18 saves on 19 shots, BOS Joonas Korpisalo: 29 saves on 31 shotsKey Performers

⭐ Porter Martone — In his fourth NHL game, Martone had a beautiful touch pass for an assist on the opening goal and capped it off with his first NHL goal in overtime. The 19-year-old has made an instant impact, and his first goal gets the Flyers back into playoff position.

⭐⭐ Dan Vladar — The reliable Flyers’ netminder was once again a catalyst in a win. He allowed one goal on 19 shots, securing his 26th win of the season. His previous career high for starts in a season was 29.

⭐⭐⭐ Christian Dvorak — Dvorak got the scoring started and added an assist on Martone’s game-winning goal. Another strong game from the Flyers’ veteran, who continues to stabilize the center position.

The Takeaway

Just when you thought their backs were against the wall after back-to-back regulation losses on Tuesday and Thursday, the Flyers pick up wins on Friday and Sunday and get all the help they need in the standings to move back into playoff position with five games remaining in the regular season. It’s remarkable how this team has turned things around in just weeks. And the newest Flyer has put his stamp on it less than one week after making his debut.

Up Next

The Flyers start a three-game road trip on Tuesday night against the New Jersey Devils at 7 PM.

Kevin Durso is Flyers insider for 97.3 ESPN.
