The Devils have made a major front office move.<\/p>\n
While the New Jersey Devils<\/a> haven\u2019t been officially mathematically eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention, all signs point toward them missing out this season.<\/p>\n It would be the second time in the last three seasons that they\u2019ve failed to play beyond the 82nd game of the regular season.<\/p>\n Rather than wait for the offseason, the Devils have announced a major change in front-office leadership. On Monday evening, it was announced that general manager and president of hockey operations Tom Fitzgerald was departing the organization.<\/p>\n The announcement was made by Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer, who said the following:<\/p>\n \u201cTom and I had a thoughtful conversation today and agreed it was time to move in a new direction,\u201d\u00a0Blitzer said<\/a>. \u201cTom changed the trajectory of our team here, including setting a franchise record for points in a season and helping make New Jersey a hockey destination. He is a well-respected leader across the Devils\u2019 organization and NHL, and I am grateful for our friendship. I wish Tom and his family all the best. As we prepare to move forward, it is important I acknowledge our fans. I recognize we have not delivered in the way you expect and deserve and I understand and share in your frustration. This is a critical offseason for our franchise, and we will explore all avenues that best position the Devils to compete for a Stanley Cup once again.\u201d<\/p>\n Former New Jersey Devils GM And President Of Hockey Operations Tom Fitzgerald Releases A Statement<\/p>\n After news of the announcement was made public, Fitzgerald himself released a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter talking with David Blitzer, it was apparent to everyone that the best course of action is to move on for the benefit of the team,\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cI am incredibly appreciative to David, Josh Harris<\/a>, and the entire New Jersey Devils organization for being a part of my life for the past decade. The Devils are fortunate to have a core of great players, vocal and passionate fans, but most importantly, tremendous people who worked with me toward a common goal. I\u2019ve always said that New Jersey is a hidden gem and I\u2019m proud of the effort that we put in to raise the standard and make it a destination. I look forward to the next step in my hockey career and will always look back fondly on my time with the Devils.\u201d<\/p>\n He had worked with the club for over a decade dating back to 2015, starting as an assistant general manager. He was then promoted to the role of general manager after the departure of Ray Shero in 2020; he would also be named executive vice president.<\/p>\n Not only did he sign a multi-year extension in 2024, but he was also promoted to president of hockey operations.<\/p>\n The Devils Are Headed Toward Not Making The Playoffs<\/p>\n The Devils, who have battled inconsistency and injury troubles this season, are likely going to miss the postseason for the second time in three years.<\/p>\n Now that Fitzgerald has been let go, it\u2019s a signal to the rest of the organization that they\u2019re on the clock and that major improvements have to start arriving soon.<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tMichael Whitaker<\/a> Michael Whitaker is a sports journalist based in metro Detroit with nearly a full decade of experience with publications like Clutch Points and The Hockey News.
