But if there’s one thing clear from his first comments as New York Islanders head coach, it’s that his approach is rooted as much in perspective as urgency.

After spending his first season in nearly two decades away from coaching, DeBoer is embracing the moment rather than running from it. “When you do that, you get a little different perspective about how fortunate we are… with four games left, [and a] chance to be playing in the playoffs,” DeBoer said. “Don’t take that for granted.”

Yes, there’s desperation — DeBoer acknowledged that reality — but he also made it clear this is exactly the kind of pressure teams should want. “That’s the beauty of the parity in the NHL… you’ve got to embrace that pressure and that race for a playoff spot,” he said .

“Honestly this did come out of left field,” DeBoer admitted, noting his first real conversation with Mathieu Darche didn’t even happen until Saturday night into Sunday morning . In a matter of hours, the situation shifted from unexpected to undeniable.

With so little time, DeBoer isn’t promising a full overhaul. Instead, the focus is on recalibration. “There’s four games left… this is a good team… we’re just trying to get that back on track,” he said . His emphasis will be on details — effort, structure, and the “non-negotiables” like backchecking, line changes, and defensive commitment that define playoff hockey.

So why take the job now?

“You’re two weeks away from the offseason… what’s the rush?” DeBoer admitted was his initial reaction . But Darche’s vision — and the people within the organization — changed that quickly. “He sold me on the organization and the vision and the direction,” DeBoer said .

There’s also belief in the roster. DeBoer pointed to elite pieces already in place, including “arguably the best goalie in the league” and a rising star in Matthew Schaefer .

Now, with time short and stakes high, DeBoer’s message is simple: reset, simplify, and embrace the moment. Because for the Islanders, there’s no easing into this.

It’s go time.

Peter DeBoer isn’t easing into this — not with four games left and a playoff spot hanging in…

[5110
5,122,3328,159,5190,5189,4
0":"post-545503","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york-islanders","8":"tag-hockey","9":"tag-islanders","10":"tag-new-york","11":"tag-new-york-islanders","12":"tag-newyork","13":"tag-newyorkislanders","14":"tag-nhl
["GET
