Those struggles could wind up leading to a top-three pick at the 2026 draft, something fans throughout Calgary are monitoring very closely.

Adding a high-end prospect would only continue the excellent work the Flames are doing as of late. In fact, Scott Wheeler of The Athletic has put them third on his 2026 NHL prospect pool rankings.

2026 NHL prospect pool rankings: No. 3 Calgary Flames:https://t.co/Ywqv8fFV4u pic.twitter.com/Q3eSfnhPwf

— Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) April 7, 2026

On top of some in-depth analysis on both the Flames and each prospect listed, Wheeler also broke down, in order, who his current top 15 prospects in Calgary are:

Zayne Parekh (D)
Cole Reschny (F)
Matvei Gridin (F)
Cullen Potter (F)
Ethan Wyttenbach (F)
Hunter Brzustewicz (D)
Sam Honzek (F)
Henry Mews (D)
Abram Wiebe (D)
Jonathan Castagna (F)
William Stromgren (F)
Aydar Suniev (F)
Trevor Hoskin (F)
Arseni Sergeev (G)
Andrew Basha (F)

Wheeler also went on to list defencemen Eric Jamieson and Etienne Morin, as well as forwards Aidan Lane, Theo Stockselius, Luke Misa, and Max Curran, along with goaltender Kirill Zarubin, as honourable mentions.

What makes this list all the more exciting for Flames fans is that both Wiebe and Castagna were only recently brought in to the organization, having both been acquired in separate trade deadline deals. Curran, meanwhile, was acquired in the Nazem Kadri deal.

Not only will the Flames likely be adding a top-five — if not top-three — pick at this year’s draft, but they also own another first-round pick from the Vegas Golden Knights that came in the Noah Hanifin deal.

In other words, should the Flames continue drafting as they have in recent years, they could soon be adding two more can’t-miss prospects to the organization. Though rebuilds never turn on a dime, it’s becoming quite easy to envision seeing this Flames team as a contender in the years that lie ahead.

You might also like:Ex-Calgary Flames forward Mantha is having career-best season in Pittsburgh

The Calgary Flames are slowly building towards something magical.
