After Sunday night\u2019s Easter goal\u2011scoring extravaganza against the Washington Capitals, every Rangers fan at Madison Square Garden \u2014 and every one watching from home \u2014 was asking the same question: Where has this team been all season?<\/p>\n
I was in the building for that 8\u20131 blowout, and the vibes were immaculate. People were smiling, the players were loose, and there was a genuine wave of optimism in the air.<\/p>\n
The Rangers have now won five of their last six games and have played spoiler to several wild\u2011card hopefuls. Ever since management and the coaching staff committed to going all\u2011in on this youth movement, the team has been energized in a way we haven\u2019t seen in two seasons.<\/p>\n
Success starts at the top of the lineup<\/p>\n
It starts with the line combinations. Mike Sullivan has kept Gabe Perreault and Alexis Lafreni\u00e8re on the top even\u2011strength unit with Mika Zibanejad, and the trio has clicked beautifully. Perreault and Lafreni\u00e8re are getting priceless mentorship from a pro\u2019s pro in Zibanejad.<\/p>\n
Next wave is stepping up<\/p>\n
J.T. Miller has also looked more comfortable since returning to his natural center position on the second line. That unit has featured a rotating cast of wingers who\u2019ve earned their elevation \u2014 most recently Tye Kartye and Conor Sheary, who seems to have found a rare late\u2011season gear.<\/p>\n
Vincent Trocheck has shifted into a third\u2011line center role, flanked by Will Cuylle and Jonny Brodzinski. It\u2019s been a spitfire line with grit and real offensive upside. Still, it\u2019s hard not to notice Trocheck\u2019s reduced even\u2011strength minutes. He remains on the first power\u2011play unit out of respect for his skill and standing, but it feels like the coaching staff is preparing this roster for life after Trocheck. He was the big name who didn\u2019t get moved at the deadline, but that decision seems like a can kicked to the offseason.<\/p>\n
The joy of the rookies has been infectious <\/p>\n
But in my opinion, the real stars of this resurgence have been the fourth\u2011line rookies. The two recently called\u2011up Czechs \u2014 Adam S\u00fdkora and Jaroslav Chmela\u0159 \u2014 have injected this team with a youthful enthusiasm and pure joy that\u2019s been missing for most of the season. Don\u2019t tell these kids the games don\u2019t matter; they\u2019re playing every shift like it\u2019s Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.<\/p>\n
With future\u2011Ranger\u2011for\u2011life Noah Laba centering that energetic fourth unit, S\u00fdkora and Chmela\u0159 have been given enough runway to shine in their limited roles. Both look like near\u2011locks to make the team next season.<\/p>\n
S\u00fdkora, a 2022 second\u2011round pick (63rd overall), immediately brings to mind a young Esa Tikkanen. The joy, the smile, the flair for the dramatic \u2014 it feels like he\u2019s destined to score some big goals in the Rangers\u2019 hopefully\u2011soon playoff future.<\/p>\n
Chmela\u0159, drafted in the fifth round in 2021 (144th overall), has been an absolute gem. His huge frame, fearless play, and intimidating presence have made him an instant fan favorite. And I hate to say it, but his emergence has made Matt Rempe\u2019s return to the lineup doubtful at best. Chmela\u0159 does everything fans want Rempe to do \u2014 and does it better. It\u2019s unfortunate that injury pushed Rempe out, but Chmela\u0159’s arrival has made it clear: Rempe is either headed for a regular role in Hartford or an eventual trade to a team willing to take on that project.<\/p>\n
