Even with a spot secured, the Wild still have plenty to play for, as they are just two points back of the Dallas Stars for second place in the Central division. Even with their up-and-down paylate this season, the Wild can still be considered favorites to win the Stanley Cup.

On Monday, the Wild announced that they were signing top prospect Charlie Stramel to an entry level contract. However, he will not be playing for the Wild this season, as he suffered a broken ankle during the Michigan State Spartans’ NCAA Tournament loss to the Wisconsin Badgers. So, he will be a factor into the team’s plans entering this upcoming offseason, after he was initially believed to be added to Minnesota’s roster late in the season.

While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Stramel revealed that he has a six-to-eight week recovery timeline, and he’s expected to be ready for training camp in the summer. Stramel says that while he’s disappointed that he won’t be joining the Wild for their playoff run, he says “that’s hockey.”

Stramel’s timeline is 6-8 weeks, he says, and his goal is to be ready for training camp. Obviously disappointed that plans changed and he could have been making his NHL debut this week or after Frozen Four, but “that’s hockey.”

— Michael Russo (@RussoHockey) April 7, 2026Charlie Stramel will factor into Wild’s plans next season due to late season ankle injury

It was an unfortunate situation for Stramel, as he not for that injury, he’d be making his pro debut before the end of Minnesota’s regular season. But as Stramel says, “that’s hockey.”

Stramel is one of the Wild’s top young players in the organization, especially after the team traded away Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, and Zeev Buium to the Vancouver Canucks in the Quinn Hughes deal. At the trade deadline, Stramel’s name was brought up in potential deals, specifically in an offer for New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Wild were “more judicious” about trading Stramel. They clearly think highly of Stramel, so it makes sense why they’d be hesitant to trade him away.

The Wild are playoff bound, but having one of their top players available for the start of next season will be huge. While Stramel’s Michigan State teammate Porter Martone is helping the Philadelphia Flyers make it into the playoffs on limited reps, the more reps Stramel takes in the preseason will be beneficial for him once the games count. With forwards like Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy in the top six, Stramel could potentially be placed on a line with at least one of them, especially if his play is strong enough.

This season at Michigan State, Stramel recorded 19 goals, 25 assists, and a +29 plus/minus rating in 27 games. The year prior, Stramel posted nine goals, 18 assists, and a +13 plus/minus rating in 37 games.

For now, the Wild will go forward with the roster they have for the playoffs. Stramel’s debut will have to wait until October, in all likelihood.

The Minnesota Wild managed to finally clinch a playoff berth this past week after they defeated the Vancouver…

[5118
5,161,38,5280,4,162
0":"post-546192","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-minnesota-wild","8":"tag-hockey","9":"tag-minnesota","10":"tag-minnesota-wild","11":"tag-minnesotawild","12":"tag-nhl","13":"tag-wild
["GET
