Peter DeBoer hasn\u2019t had much time to study his new team up close \u2014 and he\u2019s not pretending otherwise. Just days into the job with four games left in the season, the new Islanders head coach admitted he\u2019s still getting familiar with his roster on the fly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m drinking through a fire hose right now, trying to get up to speed,\u201d DeBoer said, acknowledging the whirlwind nature of his arrival.<\/p>\n
But even with limited firsthand exposure, one decision came easy.<\/p>\n
DeBoer quickly moved Mathew Barzal back to center.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy initial reaction watching Mat from the other bench is, everybody\u2019s looking for that type of speed in the middle of the ice,\u201d DeBoer said. \u201cThat speed through the middle of the ice is really dangerous, and the good teams all have that.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a move rooted less in deep internal evaluation and more in what DeBoer has seen for years from the outside \u2014 a dynamic player whose impact is maximized when he\u2019s driving play through the middle. While Barzal has shifted between wing and center this season, including a productive stretch on the wing, DeBoer sees his skill set as a natural fit down the middle.<\/p>\n
And Barzal doesn\u2019t disagree.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think my heart, as a player, is probably down the middle of the ice,\u201d he said. \u201cIt allows me to do a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n
The adjustment also reflects DeBoer\u2019s broader early approach: simplify, trust instincts, and lean into what\u2019s obvious rather than overcomplicating things in a short window.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got to get to know the group\u2026 I don\u2019t know them,\u201d DeBoer admitted. \u201cI\u2019ve been coaching in the West for 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
That reality makes sweeping changes unlikely. But this one? It\u2019s a clear signal.<\/p>\n
With the season on the line, DeBoer is starting with what he knows \u2014 and what he\u2019s always seen in Barzal: elite speed, play-driving ability, and a player built to impact the game from the middle of the ice.<\/p>\n
