While there’s always movement in the AHL, this year has felt especially difficult in Des Moines, and a big reason is the steady drain of talent from the lineup.

At the heart of Iowa’s problems is the reality that the team has not just been losing games, it has been losing players who made an impact there. The organization has leaned heavily on promotions, recalls, and trades that have stripped away some of the roster’s most important contributors, leaving the Wild to patch holes instead of building continuity.

The most obvious issue has been the constant turnover. Iowa’s own season preview described the roster as “retooled,” with veterans added to help guide younger players. However, almost as soon as the season started, the team was already dealing with a lineup that looked different from one week to the next.

The Minnesota Wild called up Jesper Wallstedt to the NHL and moved, recalled, or reassigned players as they shuffled their depth all season. That kind of movement can be survivable if it happens around a stable core, but Iowa has not had that luxury. The club traded forward Michael Milne in the deal that brought Boris Katchouk into the system. Later, they moved Katchouk for Roman Schmidt.

They also traded defenseman Wyatt Newpower to Syracuse for future considerations. Those deals probably didn’t register with many Wild fans, but they are the kinds of transactions that chip away at lineup depth and force a coaching staff to keep reworking combinations.

Just as damaging, several of Iowa’s more recognizable names have spent long stretches in the NHL, or Minnesota recalled them when injuries hit the NHL club. Hunter Haight, David Jiricek, Carson Lambos, and others have shuttled between the NHL and AHL. It’s a sign the organization has prospects worth promoting, but it also means Iowa keeps losing the players it needs most to compete on a nightly basis.

The standings tell the story. Iowa sits near the bottom of the Central Division, with 22 wins, 33 losses, 6 overtime losses, and 3 shootout losses for 53 points. The team has allowed more goals than it has scored, and that goal differential is usually the clearest sign of a club that cannot stay competitive long enough to stack wins.

When a team is constantly replacing key pieces, its problems manifest in simple ways: poor chemistry, weaker special teams, inconsistent scoring, and defensive breakdowns that turn close games into losses. Iowa’s lineup has had to absorb injuries, call-ups, and departures simultaneously. The result has been a team that often looks like it is still searching for its identity in April.

There is also a developmental cost. AHL teams are supposed to create an environment where young players can learn within structure, but that becomes much harder when the roster is in flux. Iowa’s coaching staff can preach consistency all it wants, but the lineup itself has rarely been consistent enough to make those lessons stick.

The encouraging sign is that Iowa still has talent in the system. The season preview highlights players like David Spacek, Carson Lambos, Caedan Bankier, Riley Heidt, and Rasmus Kumpulainen as part of the future. Meanwhile, they brought in veterans such as Ben Jones, Tyler Pitlick, and Nicolas Aube-Kubel to provide structure. That gives the franchise a path forward, even if this season has been trying.

Still, the bigger lesson from Iowa’s struggles is clear. Talent alone does not create success when the roster never stays intact. If the organization keeps trading away depth and relying on constant movement, the Wild will keep facing the same problem: too many good intentions, not enough continuity.

For Iowa, this season has been less about one fatal flaw and more about the cumulative effect of losing too many useful players at once. That makes the record easier to understand, even if it does not make it easier to watch.

Think you could write a story like this?
