The Masterton Trophy is awarded annually by the National Hockey League to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.<\/p>\n<p>Toews, 37, was\u00a0selected by the Winnipeg chapter of the PHWA\u00a0for his ability to endure\u00a0a multi-year, health-relatedabsence from the NHL and persevere to make his comeback\u00a0for\u00a0his hometown\u00a0Jets for the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n<p>Toews,\u00a0who signed a one-year deal with the Jets for 2025-26,\u00a0has played all 77 games for Winnipeg this season and recorded\u00a027 points (10G, 17A) and 34 penalty minutes.\u00a0Toews, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, is among the NHL\u2019s leaders in faceoff percentage (61.4%) this season and posted his 16th\u00a0consecutive double-digit goal season.\u00a0He has played 1,144 career NHL games and\u00a0tallied 910 points (382G, 528A) and 641 PIMs. Toews\u00a0has already\u00a0won\u00a0several marquee NHL awards:\u00a0the 2010 Conn Smythe Trophy\u00a0as playoff MVP, the 2012-13 Frank J. Selke Trophy\u00a0as the league\u2019s best defensive forward, and the 2014-15 Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award.<\/p>\n<p>Toews\u00a0stepped away from hockey at the end of the 2022-23 season after\u00a0dealing with\u00a0numerous health\u00a0issues, including\u00a0Long\u00a0COVID\u00a0and Chronic Inflammatory\u00a0Response Syndrome, that had plagued him since 2020.\u00a0In addition to his\u00a0play on the ice,\u00a0Toews has been a valuable mentor to his Jets teammates\u00a0and contributed to a variety of causes in the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m\u00a0honoured\u00a0by the recognition,\u201d\u00a0Toews\u00a0said about his Masterton nomination. \u201cIf I stop to look back at what the last four or five years have been like, it\u2019s\u00a0definitely been\u00a0super unpredictable.\u00a0Something that I never thought I would have to go through in my life, but at the same time I am thankful for all the struggles because honestly, it\u2019s clich\u00e9, but it\u2019s where I\u2019ve learned the most about myself, about hockey, about life, so I\u2019m thankful\u2026 This season, it\u2019s been a struggle. Every day I\u2019m digging deep and trying to find the energy\u00a0and\u00a0find a way to contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Masterton Trophy was first presented\u00a0by the NHL Writers&#8217; Association in 1968 to commemorate the late William Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars, who was originally from Winnipeg and exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.\u00a0Masterton died on Jan.\u00a015\/68\u00a0from\u00a0an injury\u00a0he sustained\u00a0during a hockey game.<\/p>\n<p>Toews\u00a0is one of 32 candidates around the NHL.
