And though they got the win tonight, the message from head coach Glen Gulutzan and players was that there is still a lot of work to be done.

Dallas got two power play chances early – one from Matt Coronato tripping up Wyatt Johnston and one from Martin Pospisil high sticking Lian Bichsel– but an aggressive Calgary team put up two strong kills and stymied both lines the Stars rolled out.

At the end of the first, Ilya Lyubushkin bestowed a power play chance onto Calgary after he got called for hooking. Dallas fended off the Flames and ended an uneventful period with two shots on goal, while Calgary logged four.

The second period saw the bulk of the game’s scoring, with Justin Hryckowian kicking it off for the Stars. Following an opportunistic bounce off the net from a shot by Thomas Harley, the forward tucked the puck behind Devin Cooley’s glove side for his 13th goal of the season.

Calgary responded six minutes later when Joel Farabee put a second-chance goal past Jack Oettinger and tied things up. The Flames continued to push right until the period ended when Yegor Sharangovich fielded a pass from Adam Klapka and slid the puck behind Oettinger. The bad luck for Dallas continued when Tyler Myers got sent to the box for tripping with forty seconds remaining.

The Flames’ power play continued into the third, and they took full advantage of it when Zayne Parekh scored almost immediately.

Down 3-1, the Stars found themselves in a hole slightly deeper than they might have liked against the third worst team in the league. Matt Duchene said Gulutzan let them know he was not pleased with the first two periods during the second intermission.

“He wasn’t happy after the second period, and he shouldn’t have been,” Duchene said. “You need a kick, sometimes from your coach, and we got it, and we deserved it, and I think we all agreed with it.”

Dallas took that message to heart and quickly went to work. Wyatt Johnston scored his 42nd goal of the season quickly after, off of Mikko Rantanen’s failed wraparound shot and put Dallas right back into the mix.

Robertson took the hint from Johnston and put up goal number 41 of his own after Duchene sent him a pass that he stretched his stick out to reach and slid the puck past Devin Cooley.

The Stars then got a power play chance, could not capitalize, but then found themselves with too many men on the ice and had to defend against Calgary. Play got disrupted when Tyler Myers hit Ryan Strome into the boards and drew blood, originally getting sent to the box for a five minute major. But upon review, the officials determined there was no call and Dallas went back to killing the penalty.

Tied at 3-3, both Dallas and Calgary put their foot on the gas, but could not manage a goal in regulation.

Overtime began, and Robertson took a high-stick from Strome in the almost the exact same spot Myers hit the Calgary forward. Robertson went down with a bloody nose and Strome received a double minor for high-sticking — giving Dallas an extra attacker for the remainder of overtime.

Two nasal plugs later, Robertson was back on the ice and ended up assisting Johnston on the game-winning goal that the forward flipped up and past Cooley to close things out for the Stars.

While Dallas was happy to bag the win, Duchene and Gulutzan said that the team needs to focus on getting their game straight no matter who the opponent might be and focus on being connected with each other as they head into the Thursday night matchup with Minnesota at 8 p.m. CT.

“That’s the exact message that I’ve been saying here. It doesn’t matter who’s coming in. This is all about us and getting our game in order,” Gulutzan said. “…We needed to dig into create a little bit more offense and we weren’t doing that. We were looking for a little bit of easy offense, but, Dutchy hit the nail on the head. We’re worried about ourselves and what our game should look like come playoff time.”

Dallas defeated Calgary at home Tuesday night, despite a slow first two periods against one of the worst…

[5117
196,147,5278,5,4,197
0":"post-547709","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-dallas-stars","8":"tag-dallas","9":"tag-dallas-stars","10":"tag-dallasstars","11":"tag-hockey","12":"tag-nhl","13":"tag-stars
["GET
