Bringing a confident Mrtka back into the fold is certainly a positive step towards achieving that goal.

From the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds, the Buffalo Sabres’ 2025 first-round pick brings 34 points in 43 regular-season games and three points in a best-of-seven series against the Penticton Vees, which the Thunderbirds lost in five games. All three of Mrtka’s points in the series were assists, but they did come in critical moments for the Thunderbirds; one such moment was Seattle’s second goal in Game 1, which would ultimately force the game into an overtime period.

Rochester Americans’ outlook and where Radim Mrtka could fit

With six games left in the regular season, Rochester currently sits in fifth in the AHL’s North Division. They hold a seven-point lead on the Utica Comets for the final playoff spot available and an eight-point edge on the last-place Belleville Senators, who were quite close to the playoff spots only a few weeks ago. While the Amerks did lose their first two games in the month of April, a two-game winning streak, combined with the fact that Belleville has lost five of their last seven games, has allowed for the team to build such a sizeable advantage for the final playoff spot.

Getting Mrtka into the lineup would allow for Rochester to start giving key defenders like Jack Rathbone some rest before the playoffs begin. A five-game runway for Mrtka could allow for him to readjust to playing in Rochester after a brief four-game stint at the start of the campaign, and give coach Michael Leone something to think about when deciding on the team’s playoff roster.

If Mrtka were to continue with Rochester during the playoffs, he would no doubt have the chance to build on the strong run of form that he had in Seattle during the postseason. While the Amerks have only won two of five this season against the Toronto Marlies, the team that they are currently slated to face in the first round, two more strong playoff performances could go a long way for Mrtka in his push to make the Sabres’ roster in the near future.

Speaking of the Buffalo Sabres …

By now, the Sabres’ future issues related to fielding a full defensive core are as clear as daylight. Logan Stanley is still a work in progress, while him and his former Winnipeg Jets teammate Luke Schenn are both set to become free agents in July. Extensions will also be a key issue for several defensemen.

Considering Mrtka’s postseason performance in Seattle, he should now be viewed as a viable option for the 2026-27 season. But he shouldn’t be seen as a lock just yet; a quartet of games in Rochester is not the biggest sample size for Buffalo’s front office to work with. Getting that closer to, if not above, 10 appearances should give the Sabres more of a portfolio to evaluate.

Another few points throughout Rochester’s final few regular-season games, in addition to some offensive contribution in a three-game first-round series against the Marlies, should help Mrtka improve on his first stint with the Amerks and give himself the foundation for a trial run in Buffalo.

As to what that could look like, it would more than likely consist of an invitation to attend training camp and play a few preseason games. If Mrtka were to then be successful, he would undoubtedly have the argument needed to be a part of Buffalo’s opening day roster for next season.

For the Rochester Americans, the return of Radim Mrtka, one of the NHL’s top prospects, couldn’t have come…

[5100
1107,229,5133,5,4,1108
0":"post-547813","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-buffalo-sabres","8":"tag-buffalo","9":"tag-buffalo-sabres","10":"tag-buffalosabres","11":"tag-hockey","12":"tag-nhl","13":"tag-sabres
["GET
