Losing another regular body now only adds to the squeeze.

Rasmussen is not the flashy headline name, but he fills the kind of role coaches notice most when it disappears. Big frame, hard minutes, net-front work, and the sort of shifts that keep a lineup from getting too easy to play against.

That is why this stings. The Red Wings do not only lose a player if Rasmussen is finished. They lose a piece of their balance.

Larkin likely had a maintenance day, which is not unusual by itself, but it still adds to the uneasy feel around the practice sheet. When your captain is off and another regular could be finished, the room feels thinner fast.

#RedWings practice before hosting Flyers tomorrow. Larkin likely has a maintenance day. Appleton remains out and Rasmussen (lower body injury) could be done for the season.

Detroit’s lineup keeps taking hits at the wrong time

The update also said Mason Appleton remains out. That may not grab as much attention as Rasmussen, but it matters when a team is already searching for stable combinations.

This is how a season starts to get away from teams. Not always with one huge injury, but with enough missing pieces that every line and every matchup starts asking a little more from the players left standing.

For McLellan, that is the coaching problem now. He does not just need effort against Philadelphia. He needs replacements to handle real minutes and keep the bottom six from slipping.

Wednesday’s game is set for 7:00, and it does not need much extra drama because the stakes are already there. Detroit has no room to treat this like a routine injury report.

That is what makes the Rasmussen update so important. If he is done, the Red Wings are not just losing games in tough fashion. They are also losing part of the lineup fabric that helps a team survive this point in the year.

And that leaves Detroit with a pretty blunt reality. The margin was already thin. Now the Red Wings may have to chase what is left of their season without one more player they could not really afford to lose.

Previously on Detroit Hockey Insider

POLL

8 HOURS AGO|41 ANSWERS

Concerning Injury Update Emerges From Red Wings Morning Skate

Would losing Michael Rasmussen for the rest of the season be a major blow for Detroit ?

Photo credit: Screenshot Dylan Larkin and Todd McLellan hit practice with one more problem: Michael…

[5101
599,93,5137,595,5,3576,4524,4,56,3358,5138,1930
0":"post-548367","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-detroit-red-wings","8":"tag-detroit","9":"tag-detroit-red-wings","10":"tag-detroitredwings","11":"tag-dylan-larkin","12":"tag-hockey","13":"tag-mason-appleton","14":"tag-michael-rasmussen","15":"tag-nhl","16":"tag-philadelphia-flyers","17":"tag-red-wings","18":"tag-redwings","19":"tag-todd-mclellan
["GET
