Displaying determination and perseverance to get to the NHL, Detroit<\/a> Red Wings forward Dominik Shine<\/a> is earning recognition for not giving up on his dream.<\/p>\n

The Detroit Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has made Shine<\/a> this year\u2019s Red Wings nominee for the Masterton Trophy. The Masterton is awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.<\/p>\n

Shine, 27, certainly checks off all of those boxes.<\/p>\n

Last season, after nine seasons and more than 450 games with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins<\/a>, Shine would earn his first recall to the Red Wings.<\/p>\n

He played nine games with the Red Wings last season. After scoring 25 goals with the Griffins this season, Shine<\/a> was again summoned to the big club. He scored his first NHL goal and now has three goals in 16 games.<\/p>\n

After such a long and arduous journey to the show, Shine is savoring every moment of his NHL opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, I just try to take it game by game, and I think that\u2019s kind of the approach I take anyway,\u201d Shine said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to focus on your next game and how you can impact the game. So that\u2019s what I\u2019ve been trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shine Giving Red Wings Whatever They Ask Of Him<\/p>\n

Shine was born in Pinckney, Michigan. He was a college hockey player at Northern Michigan. He grew up a Red Wings fan, so wearing the Winged Wheel is a dream come true for him.<\/p>\n

Playing mostly a bottom-six forward role for the Red Wings, Shine\u2019s commitment is to supplying whatever the team is asking from him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a role that I was in when I was coming into pro in the American League,\u201d Shine said. \u201cSo I kind of played a similar fourth-line role for a couple of years there in Grand Rapids.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, it\u2019s tough. You play, you know, eight, nine minutes. You\u2019ve got to make the most of your opportunities and just try to, like I said it before, you\u2019ve got to impact the game in a positive way because you can impact it in a negative way.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying less minutes, that doesn\u2019t look good usually. So I just try to be positive and good.\u201d<\/p>\n
