{"id":549166,"date":"2026-04-10T01:51:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T01:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/549166\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T01:51:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T01:51:21","slug":"cole-caufield-makes-history-for-montreal-canadiens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/549166\/","title":{"rendered":"Cole Caufield makes history for Montreal Canadiens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">MONTREAL (AP) \u2014 Cole Caufield is the first Montreal Canadiens player to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cole-caufield-50-goals-canadiens-d21df0571acd01c32749eb7002db5bc3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">score 50 goals in a season<\/a> in more than three decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Caufield scored his 50th against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night to hit the mark last reached by Stephane Richer in 1990, 35 seasons ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWhenever he has a chance to shoot it, there\u2019s a high chance it\u2019s going in,\u201d captain Nick Suzuki said last week. \u201cHe\u2019s just playing the right way, doing the right things and he\u2019s getting rewarded for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The 25-year-old from Wisconsin is the seventh player in franchise history to score 50 goals. Guy LaFleur did it six times, Richer twice and Maurice Richard, Steve Shutt, Bernie Geoffrion and Pierre Larouche once each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Caufield is right there with Colorado\u2019s Nathan MacKinnon in the NHL goal-scoring race for the Maurice \u201cRocket\u201d Richard Trophy. His 86 points in his first 77 games were already 16 clear of his previous career high, and his play is helping Montreal <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canadiens-rangers-score-fde24aa7a61657f134e945b00701b2d8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cruise into the playoffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re focused on our team game and winning games, and I think individual stuff comes with that,\u201d Caufield said, echoing a refrain from coach Martin St Louis, a Hall of Fame player. \u201cBut doing the right things, you get more chances and opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
