Oilers assistant general manager Bill Scott seen as the favourite to become new Predators general manager<\/p>\n

The Edmonton Oilers<\/a> may need to look for a new assistant general manager this offseason.Appearing on Oilers Now (10:39 mark<\/a>) on Wednesday evening, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that Oilers assistant general manager Bill Scott is a strong candidate<\/a> to fill the Nashville Predators\u2019 soon-to-be-vacant general manager role. Some even consider him the favourite.<\/p>\n

Before joining the Oilers organization, he served as the Director of Hockey Operations for the American Hockey League for four seasons. He joined the Oilers\u2019 AHL team, the Oklahoma City Barons, as their general manager beginning in the 2010-11 season. Scott spent four seasons there before being hired as the Oilers\u2019 assistant general manager shortly after the 2013-14 season.<\/p>\n

Scott only served as their assistant general manager for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, before taking over the GM role for the Bakersfield Condors for two more seasons. During that time, he also served as the Oilers\u2019 Director of Hockey Operations, mainly in charge of salary cap management.<\/p>\n

From 2018-19 until 2021-22, Scott remained as the Oilers\u2019 Director of Hockey Operations, as well as the Director of Salary Cap Management, before being hired as an assistant general manager once again, a role he still occupies.<\/p>\n

Toward the end of March, it was reported by Sportsnet\u2019s Elliotte Friedman<\/a> that Scott had interviewed for the Predators\u2019 general manager job. Barry Trotz still occupies that role, but announced he was stepping down earlier this season.<\/p>\n

If Scott is to land the general manager role for the Predators, he\u2019ll become just the third GM in franchise history since their inception in 1997-98. Hall of Famer David Poile served as their first general manager from 1997-98 until he stepped down in the summer of 2023. Trotz was the first head coach of the Predators, with a tenure that lasted until the end of the 2013-14 season. He replaced Poile shortly after.<\/p>\n

Trotz\u2019 tenure may last a little longer than expected, as the Predators caught fire since the Olympic break and now occupy the final wild card spot, albeit with an additional game played.<\/p>\n
