The 32-year-old forward made his NHL debut with the Red Wings during the 2024-25 campaign and scored his first career NHL goal against the New Jersey Devils on March 8 — becoming the fifth-oldest player in franchise history to do so. As of Friday, Shine had three goals in 17 games with Detroit this season.<\/p>\n
A native of Pinckney, Mich., Shine played four seasons (2013-17) at Northern Michigan University before signing with Detroit\u2019s American Hockey League affiliate as an undrafted free agent on March 14, 2017. And since 2016-17, he\u2019s compiled 221 points (96 goals, 125 assists) in 521 regular-season contests for the Griffins.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s so many players, I\u2019ve talked about it before, who are in the American League and maybe don\u2019t think they\u2019re going to get their chance,\u201d Shine said. \u201cThey either call it quits, go down another career path or do things like that. It\u2019s just about keeping your head down and going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n
That reality nearly became his own, as Shine considered pursuing a career in medical sales during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign, but he stuck with it.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust an unbelievable human being,\u201d Carter Mazur said. \u201cTo see his perseverance, I remember talking to him a few years ago when he was thinking about switching careers.
