That\u2019s been the question for the past couple of weeks regarding Washington Capitals<\/a> captain Alex Ovechkin. With the superstar having seemingly done everything there is to do in the game, many wonder if there\u2019s anything left for him to do. <\/p>\n During the Capitals locker cleanout day on Thursday, Ovechkin was asked about his future in the NHL? He admitted that he hopes that the Capitals\u2019 season finale this past Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> wasn\u2019t the final game of his career, but he further noted that he needs to take time this offseason to make a concrete decision.<\/p>\n Alex Ovechkin reiterated that he hopes Tuesday night in Columbus isn\u2019t his last game in the NHL, but says he\u2019ll need time to talk to his family and the Capitals.<\/p>\n One of the reporters actually asked Ovechkin, who has been with the Capitals since he was selected first overall by the team in the 2004 NHL Draft, if he would consider playing for another team.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m a free agent,\u201d Ovechkin joked<\/a>. \u201cProbably not.\u201d<\/p>\n The possibility of the 40-year-old stepping away from the game really came to the surface after an interview with longtime Capitals\u2019 radio broadcaster John Walton, when Ovi stated that he was going to wait until the summer before making a call on his career.<\/p>\n \u201cI have to talk to my family,\u201d Ovechkin said. <\/a>\u201cWith [team owner Ted Leonsis], with [general manager Chris Patrick], [president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan], and we have to make a decision in the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n Then, in Washington\u2019s final home game of the season, ironically coming against the Pittsburgh Penguins,<\/a> fans at Capital One Arena cried out to their hero, \u201cOne more year.\u201d<\/a> To which the GR8 later responded with \u201cI will think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Ovechkin will go down as the greatest goal scorer the game has ever seen. In 1,569 regular-season games, he has scored 928 goals and 756 assists for 1,684 points \u2013 good for 10th all-time. He has reached the 50-goal mark an impressive nine times, tied for the most historically with Gretzky and Mike Bossy. Ovechkin has won the Maurice \u201cRocket\u201d Richard Trophy a record nine times, the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award three times, the 2007-08 Art Ross Trophy, and the Conn Smythe Trophy when he led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup in 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Will he stay, or will he go?
