The Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> are getting ready for an in-state playoff matchup with the Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Along the way there, they’ve gotten rid of a 31-year old defenseman.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, they placed Matthew Dumba on waivers, placing his $3.75 million contract out there to be cleared off the books.<\/p>\n

Dumba played just 11 games this season for the Penguins.<\/p>\n

He has spent much of the season with AHL Wilkes-Barre\/Scranton.<\/p>\n

This move has to do with the NHL’s altered playoff salary cap rules, as well as potential AHL playoff roster spots.<\/p>\n

The reality is that Dumba didn’t become the player the Penguins hoped he could be for them, and he’ll almost certainly go unclaimed and become a free agent.<\/p>\n

Dumba has played 748 games in the NHL with 85 goals and 176 assists (261 points).<\/p>\n

This season, it was 11 games with a goal and two assists.<\/p>\n

Dumba spent last season with the Dallas Stars<\/a>. Before that, he played for Arizona and Tampa Bay in 2023-24. He had spent his first 10 NHL seasons with the Minnesota Wild<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dumba seems to have fallen off pretty quickly after mostly being a quality player for Minnesota, and now it’s not clear what his NHL future might hold.<\/p>\n

For now, it just won’t be in the Penguins’ organization.<\/p>\n
