{"id":554526,"date":"2026-04-17T12:42:25","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T12:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/554526\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T12:42:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T12:42:25","slug":"calgary-flames-close-fourth-straight-season-out-of-playoffs-look-to-crucial-draft-and-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/554526\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary Flames close fourth straight season out of playoffs, look to crucial draft and future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CALGARY \u2014 A fourth straight year of missing the NHL playoffs puts pressure on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/calgary-flames\/20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/calgary-flames\/20\" target=\"_blank\">Calgary Flames<\/a> to parlay a plethora of high draft picks into hope for fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Calgary (34-39-9) capped the regular season ranked 29th out of 32 teams, and posted the team\u2019s worst record in an 82-game season in 23 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Flames closed their season Thursday with a 3-1 win over the visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/los-angeles-kings\/26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/los-angeles-kings\/26\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>, who reached the playoffs for a fifth straight season and will face the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/colorado-avalanche\/21\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/colorado-avalanche\/21\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> in the first round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">After missing the 2025 post-season by a measly tiebreaker point, the Flames weren\u2019t close after a 2-8-2 start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">They scored the fewest goals in the league (212) and had the worst road record (11-26-4). Only the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/philadelphia-flyers\/4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/philadelphia-flyers\/4\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> had a worse power play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jonathan-huberdeau\/8476456\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jonathan-huberdeau\/8476456\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Huberdeau<\/a>\u2019s hip issues that shut him down for the season in early February was a further drag on Calgary\u2019s production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Flames\u2019 rebuild, in anticipation of a scheduled 2027 fall opening of the $1.22-billion Scotia Place, accelerated with trades of centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nazem-kadri\/8475172\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nazem-kadri\/8475172\" target=\"_blank\">Nazem Kadri<\/a> (Colorado) and defencemen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/rasmus-andersson\/8478397\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/rasmus-andersson\/8478397\" target=\"_blank\">Rasmus Andersson<\/a> (Las Vegas) and Mackenzie Weegar (Utah).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of change,\u201d said veteran forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/blake-coleman\/8476399\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/blake-coleman\/8476399\" target=\"_blank\">Blake Coleman<\/a>. \u201cWe came into the year pretty optimistic, and vying for a playoff spot last year, expecting to get back to that spot or take another step. We weren\u2019t able to do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe kind of had a tough start that set us back early. It\u2019s tough to recover when you put yourself in that kind of hole. Lessons got to be learned for next year to start on time and get off to a good start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Flames head into the off-season holding a franchise-record eight draft picks in the first three rounds of the June 26-27 draft in Buffalo, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Calgary has a shot at the No. 1 pick in the May 5 draft lottery, although the last-place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/chicago-blackhawks\/16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/chicago-blackhawks\/16\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a> have higher probabilities of their names drawn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Flames general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/craig-conroy\/8455919\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/craig-conroy\/8455919\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Conroy<\/a> is nevertheless under the microscope to generate optimism that will sell seats in a new arena, and recruit complementary talent for a 25-and-under cohort that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/matt-coronato\/8482679\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/matt-coronato\/8482679\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Coronato<\/a>, Conor Zary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/samuel-honzek\/8484180\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/samuel-honzek\/8484180\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Honzek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/zayne-parekh\/8484768\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/zayne-parekh\/8484768\" target=\"_blank\">Zayne Parekh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/matvei-gridin\/8484860\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/matvei-gridin\/8484860\" target=\"_blank\">Matvei Gridin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/dustin-wolf\/8481692\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/dustin-wolf\/8481692\" target=\"_blank\">Dustin Wolf<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 19-year-old Parekh\u2019s game-winning goal Thursday was a laser over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/anton-forsberg\/8476341\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/anton-forsberg\/8476341\" target=\"_blank\">Anton Forsberg<\/a>\u2019s far shoulder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cYou look at our record and we\u2019re a different team from the start of the year, but at home we\u2019re over .600 (so) just trying to squeeze a few more wins out on the road,\u201d the defenceman said. \u201cThat\u2019s big for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">More goal scoring is the priority. Calgary\u2019s lack of it \u2014 plus penalty minutes that ranked fourth in the league \u2014 made life hard on 25-year-old goaltender Wolf, who was the 2025 runner-up for NHL rookie of the year, and backup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/devin-cooley\/8482445\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/devin-cooley\/8482445\" target=\"_blank\">Devin Cooley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe million dollar question is, what do we improve and how do we get to that next level? Our high-end production leaves a little bit to be desired,\u201d Coleman said. \u201cThe leading scorer is in the forties (points) and hard to go too far with that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to draft well, you\u2019ve got to let your guys grow in-house and maybe make some moves in the off-season. But I know everyone\u2019s doing everything they can to keep improving and go up from here. I think that\u2019s the plan as far as I understand it. If everything trends that direction, I think there\u2019s a lot to look forward to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got some 19-year-olds in this lineup that naturally had their ups and downs. Once they hit their twenties, I imagine they\u2019re going to be superstars in this league.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/ryan-strome\/8476458\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/ryan-strome\/8476458\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Strome<\/a>, acquired at the trade deadline for a draft pick, 20-goal scorer Coleman, 22-goal man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/morgan-frost\/8480028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/morgan-frost\/8480028\" target=\"_blank\">Morgan Frost<\/a> and defencemen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/joel-hanley\/8477810\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/joel-hanley\/8477810\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Hanley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/brayden-pachal\/8481167\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/brayden-pachal\/8481167\" target=\"_blank\">Brayden Pachal<\/a> each have a year remaining on their respective contracts before unrestricted free agency in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Forwards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/ryan-lomberg\/8479066\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/ryan-lomberg\/8479066\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Lomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/victor-olofsson\/8478109\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/victor-olofsson\/8478109\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Olofsson<\/a> and defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jake-bean\/8479402\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jake-bean\/8479402\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Bean<\/a> become UFAs in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Conroy, head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/ryan-huska\/8459497\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/ryan-huska\/8459497\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Huska<\/a>, hockey operations president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/don-maloney\/8449102\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/don-maloney\/8449102\" target=\"_blank\">Don Maloney<\/a> and assistant general managers Dave Nonis and Brad Pascall all signed two-year contract extensions, announced earlier this season, through to 2027-28. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cOur job is to put enough points on the board to get the team to play more games than what the regular season schedule shows,\u201d said Huska. \u201cWe\u2019re excited about a lot of the people that are within our organization now.
