The Buffalo Sabres have the lineup to make Boston Bruins<\/a> head coach Marco Sturm eat his words. Sturm on Friday declared that his team was \u201cbigger, stronger, and more physical.\u201d If the Bruins\u2019 first-year coach believes that\u2019s his edge, well, he might be unpleasantly surprised to find that the Sabres have the sort of lineup to keep him up at night.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why it would behoove us to take a deep dive into a comparison between the Sabres and Bruins as they head into their first-round matchup in the 2026 Stanley Cup playoff<\/a>s.<\/p>\n

Sabres have clear edge up front<\/p>\n

The Boston Bruins lack the sort of firepower that a true Stanley Cup contender needs. Boston\u2019s biggest weapon is David Pastrnak. His 100-point season was head and shoulders above everyone else\u2019s on the team. Morgan Geekie, who really cooled off in the second half of the season, notched 39 goals and 68 points.<\/p>\n

While the Bruins were in the top 10 with 3.27 goals per game, it\u2019s a major difference compared to the Sabres, who were top 5 at 3.45 goals per game.<\/p>\n

That said, the Sabres didn\u2019t have a 100-point scorer. But they have a much more balanced lineup. Tage Thompson led the team with 40 goals. Alex Tuch had 33, with Josh Doan, Jason Zucker, and Jack Quinn all topping 20. Rasmus Dahlin was close as well, hitting 19 on the season.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the Sabres have a much deeper bottom six. While the Bruins have their usual goonship playing depth roles, Boston\u2019s card will be Pastrnak. If the Sabres can shut down the Czech star, the series could be over quickly for Boston.<\/p>\n

We have to give Buffalo the edge in terms of scoring. In terms of physicality, make no mistake. The Sabres can deploy Jordan Greenway to add some much-needed punch.<\/p>\n

Series could come down to the blue line<\/p>\n

As for the blue line, both teams are a little more evenly matched<\/a>. The Sabres have an elite defenseman in Rasmus Dahlin. The Bruins have one of their own in Charlie McAvoy. However, the steps Dahlin has taken this season have inserted him into the Norris Trophy conversation.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Boston\u2019s defense corps drops off significantly after McAvoy. The thing that props up Boston\u2019s defense is its physicality. Goon-extraordinaire Nikita Zadorov will be looking to use his size to intimidate his opponents. But that\u2019s why the Sabres were wise to get Logan Stanley. Stanley could neutralize Zadorov\u2019s antics before they become an issue.<\/p>\n

Sabres fans should keep an eye on Hampus Lindholm. He\u2019s one of the best defensive defensemen in the league when he\u2019s on his game. Jonathan Aspirot has also been a pleasant surprise for Boston this season. All of that adds up to a tough, thigh-checking environment the Sabres will have to deal with.<\/p>\n

However, Buffalo has an overall talented blue line. Beyond Dahlin, Owen Power, Bowen Byram, and Mattias Samuelsson can stack up with anyone any day of the week. Throw in a tough veteran combo in Luke Schenn and Logan Stanley, and, well, the Bruins won\u2019t have an easy go about it.<\/p>\n

We have to give the edge to the Sabres, even if we are slightly biased.<\/p>\n

Goaltending could be the key for the Bruins<\/p>\n

Lastly, there is the question of goaltending. If the Bruins were going to have a chance to get past the Sabres, it would be because of Jeremy Swayman. When he\u2019s on his game, the Bruins’ starting netminder can steal games. <\/p>\n

And that will be the strategy for the Bruins. They\u2019ll want their defense to tread water as much as it can and then hope Swayman can buy Pastrnak enough time to score.<\/p>\n

The Sabres, for their part, will roll with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. He\u2019s not a Vezina Trophy-quality netminder, at least not this season. But with the team around him, all Luukkonen has to do is play well enough to win. Should he falter, Alex Lyon could carry the load. However, it\u2019s unclear whether Lyon could lead the Sabres on a prolonged playoff run.<\/p>\n

All told, the Sabres get the nod in two of three areas. Unless Swayman somehow plays out of his mind and steals the series for the Bruins, the Sabres-Bruins matchup should be close for a while. Expect the first couple of games to be tight, and then the Sabres should pull away simply because their depth is much greater.<\/p>\n
