Defenseman Simon Edvinsson<\/a> is among the Detroit<\/a> Red Wings players who will be without a contract come July 1.<\/p>\n

Relax. He isn\u2019t going anywhere.<\/p>\n

As a restricted free agent, all the Red Wings are required to do to retain his rights is to present him with a qualifying offer by July 1.<\/p>\n

They will do that.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when the bargaining really begins. And as we saw a couple of years ago, when both Lucas Raymond<\/a> and Moritz Seider<\/a> were RFAs, it can take a long time for both sides to find a resolution.<\/p>\n

In each of those instances, the players agreed to terms on pacts that would keep them in Detroit for the next eight years.<\/p>\n

Edvinsson looks upon those deals as the template for what he\u2019d be seeking in a new contract.<\/p>\n

His current deal is paying him $874,125 this season. Were Edvinsson to get a contract similar to the ones agreed to by Seider and Raymond, his annual stipend would jump into the $8 million per season range.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, he\u2019d be okay with that.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d Edvinsson said of the thought of inking a long-term pact with the Red Wings. \u201cIt\u2019s where I got drafted. I felt like ever since I came here, it\u2019s been great. All the people around, teammates, fans around, it\u2019s been great. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, yeah, it would be an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red Wings Edvinsson Underwent Two Surgeries<\/p>\n

Twice this season, Edvinsson<\/a> underwent surgical procedures to fix an ailing knee. The first surgery cost him training camp. The second took place just before the Olympic break.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving two surgeries during one season is not optimal,\u201d Edvinsson said. \u201cBut I felt good enough to play, and, yeah, that\u2019s what I did. <\/p>\n

\u201cNot 100%, but nobody plays 100%. It\u2019s something you\u2019re gonna have to deal with, really. And, yeah, that was it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Detroit\u2019s first defense pairing, Edvinsson and Seider logged 1086.49 minutes of ice time together. That was third among all NHL defense tandems, according to research completed by naturalstattrick.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The 38 5-on-5 goals against when they were on the ice were the third-lowest among all defense pairings that logged at least 1000 minutes together. Their 5-on-5 goal differential of plus-13 (51-38) ranked second-best in the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt really good coming into the season, and then started off with a surgery,\u201d Edvinsson said. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy. Of course, after that, I felt really good. The team felt really good. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then, of course, another one comes. And mentally and physically, everything just kind of sucks, honestly. I try to fight my way back, both mentally and physically, in a short time, but as I said, no one plays 100% out there.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hockey. It\u2019s 82 games. It\u2019s gonna be 84 next year. And I\u2019m gonna take that with me. I\u2019m gonna work even harder this summer to really get my body and everything as good as I can get it.
