{"id":556069,"date":"2026-04-19T14:51:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T14:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/556069\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T14:51:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T14:51:31","slug":"blues-shake-up-coaching-staff-as-two-assistants-not-renewed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/556069\/","title":{"rendered":"Blues shake up coaching staff as two assistants not renewed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg\">A couple of veteran personnel will not be back behind the <a class=\"text-secondary underline underline-offset-2\" hreflang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfaceoff.com\/teams\/st-louis-blues\/line-combinations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>\u2018 bench next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg\">On Friday, Blues general manager Doug Armstrong announced that the contracts of assistant coaches Mike Weber and Claude Julien will not be renewed for the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg\"><a class=\"text-secondary underline underline-offset-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/blues\/news\/contracts-for-assistant-coaches-julien-weber-not-renewed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" hreflang=\"en\">In a statement<\/a>, Armstrong thanked the two men for their work with the organization, but noted that it was time for a change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg\">\u201cI would like to thank Claude and Mike for their contributions during their time with the organization,\u201d Armstrong said. \u201cWith their contracts set to expire this summer, we wanted to give them the opportunity to move on to the next chapter of their coaching careers while we work to building a coaching staff that is best suited to lead our team moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg\">The duo served under head coach Jim Montgomery in his first full season at the helm. While they worked together to help the Blues reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year, nearly eliminating the Presidents\u2019 Trophy-winning <a class=\"text-secondary underline underline-offset-2\" href=\"https:\/\/jetsnation.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" hreflang=\"en\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a>, the team didn\u2019t have the same fortune in 2025-26, finishing <a class=\"text-secondary underline underline-offset-2\" hreflang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfaceoff.com\/news\/teams\/nhl-standings\/2025\/wildcard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fifth in the Central Division<\/a>, missing the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference by four points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg\">Julien was hired in June 2024, when Drew Bannister was in charge. \u00a0The Blind River, Ontario native began coaching in the pro ranks in 2000 with the American Hockey League\u2019s Hamilton Bulldogs and was promoted to head coach of the <a class=\"text-secondary underline underline-offset-2\" hreflang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfaceoff.com\/teams\/montreal-canadiens\/line-combinations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Montreal Canadiens <\/a>during the 2002-03 season. He spent the next 18 seasons in the NHL, making stops with the <a class=\"text-secondary underline underline-offset-2\" hreflang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfaceoff.com\/teams\/new-jersey-devils\/line-combinations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> and  <a class=\"text-secondary underline underline-offset-2\" hreflang=\"en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfaceoff.com\/teams\/boston-bruins\/line-combinations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Bruins<\/a> before returning to the Habs in the 2016-17 campaign. He last coached during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, where he was let go in the middle of the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg\">Weber was added to the staff the summer before, while Craig Berube was the head coach. The longtime NHL defenseman was in his first NHL coaching job after spending three seasons as an assistant with the AHL\u2019s Rochester Americans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A couple of veteran personnel will not be back behind the St. Louis Blues\u2018 bench next year.
