Philadelphia Flyers fans waited six years for their team to make it back to the playoffs and the team immediately rewarded their fanbase. In Game 1 of their first-round series against the in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins, the Flyers picked up a 3-2 victory<\/a>. One of the big stars of the game was defenseman Jamie Drysdale, who scored the first goal of the game. <\/p>\n

This was Drysdale’s first playoff appearance after spending most of his career with the Anaheim Ducks before heading over to the Flyers in the Cutter Gauthier trade. And what a first playoff game to have of his career, getting on the stat sheet, and even pestering Penguins captain Sidney Crosby into taking a roughing penalty.<\/p>\n

After the game, Trevor Zegras, who played with Drysdale in both Philadelphia and Anaheim, said he is loving watching the defenseman play and shine in the playoffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“When he’s really playing, there’s not too many guys like him,” Zegras said, h\/t NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman. “I get so jealous when I watch him skate, because it’s not fair for me and everyone else. But he’s definitely taken another big step this year, and it’s definitely shown on the ice, and off the ice.”<\/p>\n

The Flyers brought in Drysdale after Gauthier made the baffling decision that he didn’t want to sign with them after being draft drafted. Due to this, the Flyers targeted a young defenseman that could develop into a top four option for them. So, they looked towards Gauthier’s fellow draft mate in Drysdale. The rest is history.<\/p>\n

Drysdale had a great game for the Flyers to give them an early 1-0 series lead over the Penguins, but that’s only part of the story, he is also having a career year. Coming off of a 20 point 2024-25 season, Drysdale scored a career-high eight goals and recorded 24 assists. His 32 points are tied for most he recorded in a single season since his 2021-22 campaign with the Ducks. Not only that, but he is fully locked in in the top four of the defensive depth chart<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In hindsight, it was a trade that benefitted both parties. Gauthier is having an incredible season, scoring 41 goals and recording 28 assists in 76 games. Not to mention, the Ducks finally made it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2018. <\/p>\n

The Flyers have pushed all of the right buttons in the past two offseasons. From trading Gauthier for Drysdale, to acquiring Zegras from the Ducks, to hiring Rick Tocchet as head coach, to signing goalie Dan Vladar. All four of these moves have panned out, and they have all played pivotal roles in the Flyers ending their playoff drought at five years.<\/p>\n

In their first year reunited, Drysdale and Zegras are playing great hockey together, and it is resulting in the resurgence of the Flyers as a Stanley Cup contender. We’ll see if the duo can help the Flyers make a deep run in the playoffs.<\/p>\n
