{"id":557064,"date":"2026-04-21T04:12:33","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T04:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/557064\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T04:12:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T04:12:33","slug":"hershey-bears-get-support-from-past-calder-cup-champions-capitals-players-it-just-shows-how-close-knit-our-teams-the-last-couple-of-years-were","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/557064\/","title":{"rendered":"Hershey Bears get support from past Calder Cup champions, Capitals players: \u2018It just shows how close-knit our teams the last couple of years were\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HERSHEY, PA \u2014 The Hershey Bears had a number of former players and NHL supporters in the house for their back-to-back games over the weekend at Giant Center.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday night, the team <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/19\/hendrix-lapierre-vincent-iorio-attend-hershey-bears-game-calder-cup-champions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was graced by<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/player\/hendrix-lapierre\/?ref=internal-player-link\" class=\"player\" title=\"View Hendrix Lapierre&#039;s stats, bio, and status\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hendrix Lapierre<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/team\/washington-capitals\/?ref=internal-team-link\" class=\"team\" title=\"View Washington Capitals news and roster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Capitals<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/player\/vincent-iorio\/?ref=internal-player-link\" class=\"player\" title=\"View Vincent Iorio&#039;s stats, bio, and status\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vincent Iorio<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/team\/new-york-rangers\/?ref=internal-team-link\" class=\"team\" title=\"View New York Rangers news and roster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a>) \u2014 former roommates in Hershey who won back-to-back Calder Cup championships with the club in 2023 and 2024. They were joined by fellow Calder Cup champions in Chase Priskie (KHL\u2019s Sibir Novosibirsk), Jake Massie (KHL\u2019s Barys Astana), and Garrett Roe (retired). Capitals assistant coach Patrick Wellar, who had been behind Hershey\u2019s bench as an assistant for the previous seven seasons, was also with the group of players.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Capitals first line center, <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/player\/dylan-strome\/?ref=internal-player-link\" class=\"player\" title=\"View Dylan Strome&#039;s stats, bio, and status\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dylan Strome<\/a>, was in attendance, along with his wife Tayler and their children, to support Matt Strome. Capitals defenseman <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/player\/dylan-mcilrath\/?ref=internal-player-link\" class=\"player\" title=\"View Dylan McIlrath&#039;s stats, bio, and status\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dylan McIlrath<\/a>, who previously captained the Bears to their back-to-back Calder Cups in 2023 and 2024, was also in the house with his family. Lapierre and Iorio also returned for their second game of the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The visits were meaningful for the current Bears, who needed points in the final two games of the regular season to improve their playoff seeding. <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/20\/ivan-miroshnichenko-derek-king-critical-comments-first-line-ilya-protas-bogdan-trineyev\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Their overtime victory on Sunday<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2026\/04\/19\/hershey-bears-bridgeport-islanders-atlantic-division-semifinals-playoff-schedule\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gave them the fifth seed in the Atlantic Division<\/a>, earning them a three-game series against the Bridgeport Islanders and guaranteeing them one home playoff game, which they would not have received if they lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s awesome,\u201d Matt Strome said. \u201cI think it just shows how close-knit our teams the last couple of years were. For them to come down here and see us and just talk with us, it was awesome. It was great to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows how special of a place Hershey is,\u201d Andrew Cristall said. \u201cAll those guys wanting to come back here and support their old teammates and us new guys is pretty awesome. So it\u2019s cool to see them and glad we got them a win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just shows you the respect Hershey has,\u201d Bears head coach Derek King added. \u201cIt was great to see some of those guys. Hopefully down the road here, when hopefully we get another Cup back here, those guys that were on that Cup team, the next ones are coming back to visit. You hear all the positive things, the stories. It\u2019s just good to see those guys around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former players sat in Bryan Helmer\u2019s suite (Helmer, a former Bears player and AHL Hall of Famer, is the Bears\u2019 vice president of hockey operations) and could be seen chatting throughout the night. During Sunday\u2019s game, the Stromes took their children down to glass level during warmups so they could say hi to their uncle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-591347\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/dylan-strome-matt-hershey-bears-game.jpg\" alt=\"Dylan Strome and Matt Strome during warmups\" width=\"1206\" height=\"2140\"  \/>\ud83d\udcf8: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/taylerstrome\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@taylerstrome\/Instagram<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Stromes had the opportunity to play together with the Capitals earlier in the season when Washington played an exhibition game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/team\/philadelphia-flyers\/?ref=internal-team-link\" class=\"team\" title=\"View Philadelphia Flyers news and roster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> at Giant Center in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s special,\u201d Matt <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2025\/09\/25\/dylan-strome-matt-strome-playing-together-brothers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said then<\/a>. \u201cI know it\u2019s just preseason, but to be wearing the same jersey as my brother, it\u2019s something I\u2019ve wanted to do for a long time now. To get that chance in such a good organization that\u2019s been so huge for Dyl and I, it\u2019s just surreal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dylan <a href=\"https:\/\/russianmachineneverbreaks.com\/2024\/05\/06\/dylan-strome-hershey-bears-game-matt-strome-first-time-9-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had previously come to one of his younger brother\u2019s playoff games in 2024<\/a>, which was the first time he\u2019d seen his brother play live and in person in nine years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, when he got to Washington, he found a home for himself,\u201d Matt Strome said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re playing with the greatest goal scorer ever, you just got to get him the puck. So so happy for him and all the success he\u2019s had.
