With the playoffs rolling on without them, the focus in New York has fully shifted toward a roster retool. Right in the middle of all of it is veteran centerman Vincent Trocheck. He’s still an elite two-way player on a very reasonable $5.625 million cap hit, but that’s also what makes him their most valuable trade chip. For General Manager Chris Drury, moving Trocheck adds more valuable pieces and prospects to the organization.

If they do decide to move him, a few teams stand out as the most logical landing spots.

Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild have been tied to Trocheck quite a bit, and it’s not hard to see why. The connection starts with GM Bill Guerin, who has a history with him through Team USA. Beyond that, Minnesota has a pretty clear need down the middle. After moving Marco Rossi in the deal for Quinn Hughes, there’s a hole in their top six that could be filled as early as next season.

From a cap standpoint, this is one of the cleaner fits. The Wild have the space to take on his full contract without asking the Rangers to retain anything, which would matter a lot for New York as they try to reshape their roster a bit. It just lines up in a way that makes sense on both sides.

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings feel like one of the more natural fits, both from a hockey standpoint and just overall situation after their epic collapse that forced them to miss the playoffs again. They were in on him back in 2022 before he signed with the Rangers, and that kind of interest usually doesn’t just disappear.

For Trocheck, Detroit checks a couple of important boxes. They’re a team on the rise, trying to get back into the playoffs. The Red Wings could really use a veteran presence down the middle to support their younger core, especially someone who plays with a bit of edge.

There have been talks before between Drury and Detroit, but the price was reportedly too high. If that comes down even a bit this summer, this starts to feel like one of the more realistic outcomes.

Carolina Hurricanes

A return to the Carolina Hurricanes is another one that makes a lot of sense, maybe more than people expect. Trocheck had some of his best seasons there, and the organization already knows exactly what he brings.

Carolina’s system is built around players who can handle both sides of the puck, win draws, and play in all situations. That’s basically his game. The Hurricanes are always in the mix, but they’ve had stretches where they look like they’re missing a bit of bite when things tighten up.

Bringing him back would be a pretty low-risk move in that sense. The only thing is that Carolina usually sticks to its price point. They’re not a team that throws assets around just to make a splash, so this one probably depends on how aggressive the Rangers want to be. If it’s more of a controlled retool, it works. If they’re trying to cash in big, maybe not as much.

Regardless of where he ends up, it seems pretty clear that the organization is going to elect to trade him this summer. It does make sense; they are in the middle of a retool/rebuild and want to recoup assets. Parting with Trocheck could open the door for a younger forward to play higher up in the lineup and unlock their potential. It doesn’t seem there is a ton of pressure to make a rushed trade, but if the price is right, expect the Rangers to part with Trocheck as early as the 2026 NHL Draft.

Spencer Lazary Spencer Lazary is a contributor at Heavy.com and has five years of experience covering the NHL.
