{"id":559635,"date":"2026-04-26T02:36:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T02:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/559635\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T02:36:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T02:36:24","slug":"doug-armstrong-set-to-hand-over-gm-duties-to-steen-i-think-alex-is-hungry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/559635\/","title":{"rendered":"Doug Armstrong set to hand over GM duties to Steen: \u2018I think Alex is hungry\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Doug Armstrong\u2019s long tenure as general manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/st-louis-blues\/19\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/st-louis-blues\/19\" target=\"_blank\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> is in its final stretch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a decision that was first announced in June 2024, Armstrong will hand over GM duties to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/alexander-steen\/8470257\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/alexander-steen\/8470257\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Steen<\/a> this summer while maintaining his role as the club\u2019s president of hockey operations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I told the players right after the trade deadline is, for all intents and purposes that Alex is the GM as far as you\u2019re concerned now. There are no more trades, there are no more waivers (this season),\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/blues\/news\/armstrong-set-to-pass-gm-duties-to-steen-on-july-1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/blues\/news\/armstrong-set-to-pass-gm-duties-to-steen-on-july-1\">Armstrong told the media recently.<\/a> \u201cNow Alex has to put his stamp on the team in exit meetings and (set) his expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Armstrong, 61, has been the Blues\u2019 general manager since 2010, guiding the franchise to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2019. He also won the General Manager of the Year in 2012 and made the playoffs on 10 occasions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Steen, 42, spent 12 years with the Blues as a player and was part of their championship team before retiring in 2020 due to back issues. Steen has been a part of the Blues\u2019 front office since 2023 and will now take over as the general manager. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think Alex is hungry. He\u2019s ready,\u201d Armstrong said. \u201cA new leadership voice at that level is going to be great for the franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Armstrong said he and Steen will share duties over his final few months on the job, including this year\u2019s NHL Draft, taking place June 27-28 in Los Angeles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">St. Louis (37-33-12) finished four points behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/los-angeles-kings\/26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/los-angeles-kings\/26\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference this season. They currently own three first-round draft picks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMoving around the draft, picking the players, and if players are involved in any trades around the draft \u2014 I don\u2019t know who has final say, but we\u2019ll work together \u2014 if there are guys traded at the draft, it will be [Alex\u2019s] call with my guidance,\u201d Armstrong said. \u201cIf we didn\u2019t have [first-round picks] this year, we could probably expedite this (transition) a little bit, but we do have three \u2014 and we\u2019re not going to (expedite it) because this is a massive two months for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/st-louis-blues\/19\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/st-louis-blues\/19\" target=\"_blank\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Forwards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/dylan-holloway\/8482077\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/dylan-holloway\/8482077\" target=\"_blank\">Dylan Holloway<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jonatan-berggren\/8481013\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jonatan-berggren\/8481013\" target=\"_blank\">Jonatan Berggren<\/a> as well as defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/matthew-kessel\/8482516\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/matthew-kessel\/8482516\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Kessel<\/a> are all restricted free agents this summer while defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/justin-holl\/8475718\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/justin-holl\/8475718\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Holl<\/a> and forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/oskar-sundqvist\/8476897\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/oskar-sundqvist\/8476897\" target=\"_blank\">Oskar Sundqvist<\/a> are both unrestricted free agents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Armstrong also stepped down from his role as general manager of Team Canada following a silver-medal performance at the Winter Olympics in Italy. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Doug Armstrong\u2019s long tenure as general manager of the St. Louis Blues is in its final stretch.
