Daxon Rudolph is projected to be a high placing, first round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Rudolph is an Alberta born and raised player with remarkable offensive instincts, especially for a (right shot) defenceman.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s dive into what Rudolph could bring to the Calgary Flames.<\/p>\n

Scouting report<\/p>\n

Rudolph is from Lacombe, Alberta where he played some minor hockey before playing in Red Deer with the U15 AAA Red Deer Rebels under head coach Justin Jarmolicz. Jarmolicz has high praise for Rudolph and his character both on and off the ice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHis personality trait that was different than most was his constant thirst for knowledge and learning of the game. He made the whole team better by trying new things and helping guys around him learn at a high level too\u201d said Jarmolicz.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think people need to know what a top-notch human being he is. (A) Very high character kid that you want young hockey players to look up to.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alongside his natural leadership abilities, he has a notable hockey IQ that allows him to make plays, pick up passes and puck handle at a high speed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has an elite hockey IQ that can create offence and defend quickly. He is a leader and people gravitate to him,\u201d says Jarmolicz.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHis ability to make plays and move to space in the offensive zone is second to none. His offensive instincts are off the chart.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This same praise is also shown in multiple external scouting reports.<\/p>\n

Daxon Rudolph, D, 6-foot-3, 206 pounds, Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) Rudolph has been a workhorse for the Raiders all season long. He\u2019s averaged 23:57 per game of ice time, while being deployed in all situations (3:15 PP\/2:41 PK). Rudolph has produced 27G-43A already this year and he\u2019s plus-23. His combination of size, skill, physicality and willingness to block shots are attractive attributes. The right-shot defenceman could develop into a top-pairing NHL blue liner in time.<\/p>\n

Rudolph is a good skater whose skating patterns, flow and edges are comfortable. He can manipulate coverage or jump off the line. He sees the ice well and can beat the first layer and then find the back door through a second layer. He defends the rush well and has a good stick. He\u2019s a heady player who thinks the game well. He has good size. He\u2019s willing to jump and has a great catch-and-release shot that I expected him to score with more entering this season, and even through the first month or so when they weren\u2019t falling quite like they were popping. He doesn\u2019t have the offensive upside of Reid or Xavier Villeneuve, or the physicality of Carels, but he\u2019s just a very good player who projects to have a long NHL career as a top-four defenseman.<\/p>\n

I did think about ranking him a few spots higher here and he\u2019s trending right now.<\/p>\n

The numbers<\/p>\n

After a season in Red Deer, Rudolph moved to the Northern Alberta Xtreme U15 Prep and stayed with them for two seasons. During his U18 season (2023-24) with Xtreme, he racked up an impressive 22 goals, 37 assists, 59 points in 28 games.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the 2023 WHL draft, Rudolph was drafted first overall to the Prince Albert Raiders. He played his first season with them during the 2024-25 WHL season where he was a force on the ice with 7 goals, 34 assists, 41 points in 64 games. During this season, he also played in both the U17 World Hockey Challenge and the U18 World Championships. In these tournaments, he did not rack up any points but was still an incredible asset to the team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He continued to play with the Raiders for the 2025-26 season where he was named alternate captain for the team. He garnered 28 goals, 50 assists, 78 points in 68 games this season and played in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where Team Canada won bronze.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What would he bring to the Flames?<\/p>\n

The Flames are in need of defencemen who can compliment their existing lineup, which is what they could find in Rudolph. They would benefit from a player with height and strength to help back up the teammates, with him being 6\u20192\u2033 and known for his physical and shooting strength, he would be an asset in this instance \u2013 regardless of the Flames having several strong rightie defenders in their system.<\/p>\n

He continues to make connections in the NHL, that would make him an incredible asset to any team, especially the Flames.\u00a0<\/p>\n
