The Detroit Red Wings<\/a> need to make big changes and rumors are already flying. Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman<\/a> was blunt in his post-season conference, saying the team needs better players to make a push to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In fact, one NHL insider has an idea for Detroit in a possible trade this summer.<\/p>\n

Sportsnet\u2019s Elliotte Friedman believes the Red Wings should be looking at St. Louis Blues<\/a> goaltender Jordan Binnington<\/a> during the offseason, as said by the insider on the 32 Thoughts Podcast<\/a>. Friedman didn\u2019t think John Gibson<\/a> and Cam Talbot<\/a> were problems, but it would represent a possible upgrade.<\/p>\n

Binnington was the\u00a0starting goaltender for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, leading them to a silver medal. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old goaltender struggled to perform in St. Louis with a .873 save percentage and a 3.33 goals allowed per game. While the statistics weren\u2019t great, Binnington is still a good goaltender.<\/p>\n

Prior to his struggles during the 2025-26 NHL season, Binnington had two campaigns with a .900-plus save percentage and under 2.9 goals allowed per game. When it matters the most, the St. Louis goaltender shows up, as he did in the 2026 Olympics and his last two appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.<\/p>\n

There are a few things that could hold back a potential deal. Detroit has a surplus of highly regarded goaltender prospects in its system. With Sebastian Cossa\u00a0and\u00a0Trey Augustine as top prospects, the organization might be more willing to ride with Gibson again and exhibit patience.<\/p>\n

After all, the Red Wings have other areas of need, including an elite forward and a new bottom six. For now, it is an interesting idea, but Binnington may not be a need.<\/p>\n
