Plenty of Detroit Red Wings fans still wish that the club hadn\u2019t traded defenseman Filip Hronek. He skated in the top defense pairing with the Vancouver Canucks again this season.<\/p>\n

Hronek was anticipating doing the same for Czechia in the upcoming IIHF World Championship, but now that opportunity is looking to be tenuous at best.<\/p>\n

During a pre-tournament game against Finland on Thursday, Hronek tangled behind the Czech net with Finnish forward Mikael Sepp\u00e4l\u00e4. Hronek fell to the ice with Sepp\u00e4l\u00e4 on top of him. Sepp\u00e4l\u00e4 then proceeded to use his right hand to slam Hronek\u2019s head down into the ice.<\/p>\n

Hronek was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Friday. As the team awaited results, there were conflicting reports on Hronek\u2019s status.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m afraid it could be something more serious,\u201d said Czech coach Radim Rul\u00edk, according to reporting by Swedish website Hockey Sverige<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Assistant coach Jiri Kalous offered a more optimistic tone to the Czech website iSport<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are always positive,\u201d Kalous said. \u201cWe believe that everything will be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hronek played all 82 games for the Canucks this season, accumulating 49 points.. He was with the Red Wings from 2018 to 2023. During the COVID-shortened 2020-21 NHL season, Hronek led Detroit in scoring with 26 points. He and Paul Coffey (1994-95) are the only defensemen to lead the Red Wings in scoring during a single season.<\/p>\n

Ex-Red Wings Forward Joining Swedes<\/p>\n

Sweden bolstered its World Championship roster, adding a former Red Wings player and the brother of another ex-Detroit forward.<\/p>\n

St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist<\/a> is joining the Swedish team. Sundqvist played for the Wings from 2022 to 2023.<\/p>\n

He\u2019ll be joining current Red Wings defenseman Albert Johansson<\/a> in the Swedish lineup.<\/p>\n

The Swedes were also adding goalie Arvid Soderblom of the Chicago Blackhawks. He\u2019s the brother of former Red Wings forward Elmer Soderblom<\/a> of the Pittsburgh Penguins.<\/p>\n

It will be interesting to see if Elmer opts to join his brother at the world tourney now that the Penguins have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.<\/p>\n
