Still only 24, Lucas Raymond<\/a> has filled some key roles in his time with the Detroit Red Wings. But he\u2019s breaking new ground with the Swedish national team at the IIHF World Championship.<\/p>\n

As the Swedes go for gold in Switzerland, Raymond\u2019s role is a surprising one, even to him.<\/p>\n

As they get ready to open the tournament on Friday against Sidney Crosby<\/a>, Macklin Celebrini<\/a> and Canada, Raymond is skating on Sweden\u2019s top forward line.<\/p>\n

His linemates are a pair of 18-year-olds \u2013 Viggo Bj\u00f6rck and Ivar Stenberg. Like Raymond, who went to Detroit with the fourth overall pick of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, both of these youngsters expect to come off the board quickly on draft day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the first time ever, I would almost say, that I am the oldest in the line,\u201d Raymond told Swedish website Hockey Sverige. \u201cIt\u2019s really fun. They are two good players, and they are very skilled. It is fun to see them play the way they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raymond Bringing Gravitas to Swedish Lineup<\/p>\n

Youth is being served on Sweden\u2019s World Tourney roster. Bj\u00f6rck and Stenberg are among five teenagers in the lineup who helped the Swedes take World Junior gold earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Raymond and fellow NHLer Oliver Ekman-Larsson<\/a> of the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> are skating in the first power-play unit for Sweden alongside teenagers Bj\u00f6rck, Stenberg, and Jack Berglund.<\/p>\n

The view these kids hold of Raymond is that he is an icon of Swedish hockey, a cut above the rest of the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone knows how good he is,\u201d said Anton Frondell, another one of Sweden\u2019s teens. \u201cHe\u2019s stepping up, playing, and looking very good. He\u2019s an incredible player, especially up front, in the goal scoring and offensive zone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great that he\u2019s there and of course he\u2019s someone you look up to, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t only Sweden\u2019s kids who view Raymond in the highest regard. Former Swedish NHL players also see star quality in Raymond\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

Former Swedish NHL defenseman Oscar Klefbom<\/a> compared Raymond to his old Edmonton Oilers<\/a> teammate, Connor McDavid<\/a>, in the way in which he can make high-end plays at top speed.<\/p>\n

While flattered, Raymond was taking such high praise with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obviously fun,\u201d Raymond said. \u201cI think McDavid, he\u2019s on his own level. It\u2019s absolutely fun and always fun to hear something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
