As the offseason rolls on, so do the Edmonton Oilers\u2019 player grades. The last report card<\/a> graded Curtis Lazar, and now we turn our attention to Matt Savoie<\/a>. The local kid has one more season left on his entry-level contract (ELC) and is eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1.<\/p>\n

The Oilers acquired Savoie<\/a> in July 2024, and he spent most of the 2024-25 season in the American Hockey League (AHL). He played just four games with Edmonton that season and registered one assist. The 22-year-old established himself as a full-time NHLer this season. He\u2019s a smart, defensively responsible winger who thinks the game at a high level. Let\u2019s take a deeper look at his season and how he impacted the Oilers.<\/p>\n

2025-26 Performance<\/p>\n

Savoie played all 82 games, recording 18 goals and 37 points with a plus-6 rating, averaging 14:47 per game. However, he found his offensive game after the Olympic break. Before the break, he had nine goals and 18 points in 58 games and had only two multipoint performances.<\/p>\n

The right-shot winger took off after the break, recording nine goals and 19 points in the final 24 games. He had three multipoint performances and also had three separate three-game point streaks. He didn\u2019t record a three-game point streak before the break. He also recorded his first NHL hat trick in the final game of the regular season. The youngster came up clutch, scoring five game-winning goals, tied for the team lead with Evan Bouchard, Jack Roslovic, and Vasily Podkolzin<\/a>. It took some time, but he finally broke out offensively.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the playoffs were a different story. He had just one assist in six games with a minus-1 rating. This was his first taste of playoff hockey, and he didn\u2019t make a positive impact. Despite that, there\u2019s a lot to be excited about from his overall game.<\/p>\n

As a rookie, Savoie was trusted in all situations. He spent some time on the power play in Leon Draisaitl\u2019s absence, recording five power-play goals and seven power-play points. However, he also became a crucial penalty killer. He led all forwards with 132:13 of shorthanded ice time, scoring two shorthanded goals.<\/p>\n

Savoie Got Top-Line Minutes<\/p>\n

Savoie finished the season on the top line alongside Connor McDavid<\/a> and Zach Hyman. He developed chemistry with the Oilers\u2019 captain, and that trio looked good together. In 79:40 of ice time at 5-on-5, they outscored their opponents 5-1. They got the results, and that should be the top line heading into next season. Savoie has earned those minutes<\/a> and should be rewarded for his efforts.<\/p>\n

McDavid commented on Savoie\u2019s play<\/a> following Edmonton\u2019s 5-2 win over the Utah Mammoth on March 24. \u201cHe\u2019s playing well. He\u2019s doing a lot of really good things. He plays with a lot of energy, he\u2019s got a great motor on him, he keeps pucks alive, and that\u2019s all you can ask for,\u201d the captain stated. The youngster gets to the scoring areas and can keep up with McDavid\u2019s speed. They complement each other extremely well.<\/p>\n

Overall Grade<\/p>\n

Overall, this was a quality rookie season for Savoie, and he will only get better. He\u2019s undersized at just 5-foot-10, 179 pounds, but he doesn\u2019t play like it. He\u2019s not afraid to get into the corners and take a hit to make a play. He uses his speed to generate offence and is a tenacious forechecker. The St. Albert, Alberta, native makes subtle plays that often go unnoticed. He gained more confidence with the puck the longer the season went. He has a great work ethic and is a massive part of Edmonton\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

Therefore, he gets a B for this season. His 18 goals tied him for seventh in rookie goal scoring<\/a> in franchise history with four other players. He was the last rookie to score 18 goals since teammate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins accomplished that in 2011-12. Savoie has the potential to be a perennial 20-goal scorer. Hopefully, he can take another step forward next season and be an impactful piece in the top six.<\/p>\n
