He is still under contract for one more season, meaning Vegas can pay him not to coach. That also means he would not be coaching the division rival Oilers.

Cassidy would likely be a highly sought-after candidate if the Golden Knights allowed him to interview elsewhere. His first stint as a head coach was short-lived. He coached the Washington Capitals in 2002-03, leading them to the playoffs. He was then first after an 8-18-1-1 start the next year. Cassidy would resurface in 2016-17, taking over the final 27 games with the Boston Bruins. He would remain the coach there through the 2021-22 season, making it to the playoffs each year, and the Stanley Cup Finals in 2019.

After being fired by the Bruins, he was hired by the Golden Knights, taking over for Peter DeBoer. In his first season, he won the Stanley Cup. They lost in the playoffs the next two seasons, and then Cassidy was fired with just eight games left in the regular season. Unless Vegas changes its mind about allowing him interview for another job, his next stop will have to wait until 2027-28.

The Vegas Golden Knights fired Bruce Cassidy at the end of March, replacing him with John Tortorella.
