Former Boston Bruins<\/a> defenseman Dougie Hamilton<\/a> could be on the move this offseason.<\/p>\n

Boston selected Hamilton ninth overall in the 2011 NHL Draft, in a draft pick they acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> in the Phil Kessel<\/a> trade. After just three years in Boston, the Bruins dealt Hamilton to the Calgary Flames<\/a> for a 2015 first-round pick and two second-round picks in 2015.<\/p>\n

Hamilton then spent three years in Calgary before being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>, and after three years there, he signed a seven-year, $63 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.<\/p>\n

Yet, despite Hamilton still having two more years on his deal, NHL insider Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet named Hamilton a trade candidate heading into the offseason.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Devils are another team that will be wrestling some with the salary cap,\u201d Kypreos wrote<\/a>. “With Arseny Gritsyuk<\/a> and Simon Nemec<\/a> becoming RFAs, their available cap room will be taken up quickly and so new GM Sunny Mehta will be looking for other ways to shave off money. Hamilton had appeared on my trade board all regular season and the challenge remains finding a taker for his $9-million cap hit, or retaining money on that to make a deal work. He has two years left on his contract.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton still is an effective second or third-pairing defenseman, but the cap hit is the issue, so New Jersey will likely have to retain money on him.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old recorded 12 goals and 27 assists for 39 points in 77 games last season with New Jersey. In his three years with the Bruins, Hamilton skated in 178 games, recording 22 goals and 61 assists for 83 points, while in his NHL career, he\u2019s played in 912 games, recording 163 goals and 377 assists for 540 points.<\/p>\n
