{"id":588011,"date":"2026-05-31T19:12:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T19:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/588011\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T19:12:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T19:12:24","slug":"canadiens-legend-claude-lemieuxs-family-donates-his-brain-to-cte-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/588011\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadiens legend Claude Lemieux&#8217;s family donates his brain to CTE research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of Claude Lemieux is donating his brain to the Boston University CTE Center\u00a0to research the long-term consequences of repetitive head impacts and traumatic brain injury, his son Brendan has announced on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DY-9_7Emx5B\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=339bef96-0968-4a62-a5d8-9c49b5f219fa&amp;img_index=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/sports\/hockey\/montreal-canadiens\/former-canadiens-forward-claude-lemieux-dead-at-age-60\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/sports\/hockey\/montreal-canadiens\/former-canadiens-forward-claude-lemieux-dead-at-age-60\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The four-time Stanley Cup winner died Thursday<\/a> by suicide, three days after he carried the torch into the Bell Centre ahead of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final between the Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes. He was 60.<\/p>\n<p>Boston University is recognized as a world leader in researching chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and the long-term effects of repetitive brain trauma in athletes, military veterans and first responders, with more than 70 per cent of the world\u2019s reported cases of CTE held by the CTE Center. The centre also houses the UNITE Brain Bank, the world\u2019s largest tissue repository focused on traumatic brain injury and\u00a0CTE.<\/p>\n<p>Lemieux was a 20-year-old rookie with the Canadiens in 1986 when he won his first Stanley Cup, and he went on to a 21-year career with the National Hockey League.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family has also given permission for the CTE Center to identify Claude by name in connection with his donation and any findings it may publicly share in accordance with its research protocols,\u201d the Instagram post said.<\/p>\n<p>The post said the family\u2019s decision \u201cis a gift to science, to athletes, and to future generations of families seeking answers.
