Landon Miller<\/p>\n

The Detroit<\/a> Red Wings had high hopes when they selected Swedish center Maxmilian Kilpinen<\/a> with the 129th pick of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Ditto when the club was selecting goaltender Landon Miller<\/a> with the 126th pick of the 2024 draft.<\/p>\n

Hope doesn\u2019t always spring eternal, though. Dreams don\u2019t always come true.<\/p>\n

As of today, neither Kilpinen nor Miller is still among the list of Red Wings prospects.<\/p>\n

Detroit had until June 1 to sign both players and was opting to let the option expire in each case.<\/p>\n

Kilpinen Never Made the Grade<\/p>\n

Selected from Orebo\u2019s junior team, Kilpinen\u2019s size (6-foot-1, 187 pounds) made him an intriguing pick. However, he never sized up.<\/p>\n

Kilpinen would play just three games in the SHL, never collecting a point. He also endured his struggles in Hockey Allsvenskan, Sweden\u2019s second division. In 26 games with Ostersunds IK, he accounted for two goals and one assist.<\/p>\n

By the end of the 2024-25 season, Kilpinen had sunk all the way to Hockeyettan, Sweden\u2019s third division. That\u2019s where he spent the entire 2025-26 campaign. With Hudiksvalls HC, he put up 16-22-38 numbers in 33 games.<\/p>\n

So far, Marco Kasper<\/a> (eighth overall) is the only player from Detroit\u2019s 2022 draft class to play NHL games for the Red Wings. From that draft, forwards Amadeus Lombardi and Dylan James, and defenseman Anton Johansson all finished up last season with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.<\/p>\n

Miller lost his way After Being Drafted by the Red Wings<\/p>\n

Miller\u2019s failure to earn an entry-level pact was the result of several factors, not all of them his own doing. Detroit may possess the richest pipeline of goalie prospects in the NHL. Certainly, Michal Postava<\/a>, Sebastian Cossa<\/a>, Trey Augustine<\/a>, Carter Gylander, Rudy Guimond<\/a>, and Michal Pradel all rated ahead of Miller of Detroit\u2019s goalie prospect depth chart.<\/p>\n

Miller\u2019s performance the past two seasons with the OHL\u2019s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds was also substandard. In each of the past two seasons, he struggled to maintain the role as the No. 1 goaltender in the Soo.<\/p>\n

Last season, he posted a 4.07 goals-against average and .877 save percentage in 37 games. This season, Miller\u2019s GAA improved to 2.82. However, his save percentage remained a disappointment at .890. At the OHL trade deadline, the Greyhounds moved to acquire LA Kings<\/a> goalie prospect Carter George<\/a> from Owen Sound.<\/p>\n
