Robert Thomas, who is signed to an 8-year, $65 million contract carrying an $8.125 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season, is no longer viewed as a realistic trade target for the Canadiens. After weeks of speculation connecting the Canadiens to the St. Louis Blues center, a new report has made the organization\u2019s position clear.<\/p>\n

St. Louis insider Andy Strickland shut down the rumors when he wrote on X<\/a>: \u201cRobert Thomas trade rumors can be put to rest. The Blues<\/a> are not looking to move their #1 center. Expect Thomas to be on the roster when training camp begins in September.\u201d<\/p>\n

The update effectively ended talk of a blockbuster move involving one of the league\u2019s most valuable centers.<\/p>\n

The decision is significant because Montreal had been linked to Thomas for quite some time. The Canadiens viewed him as a potential long-term solution behind Nick Suzuki and an opportunity to strengthen the team\u2019s center depth with a proven top-line player entering his prime years.<\/p>\n

However, the asking price was always the biggest hurdle. Earlier this season, Canadiens insider Marco D\u2019Amico reported that St. Louis was seeking a return similar in value to the package involved in the Quinn Hughes<\/a> trade.<\/p>\n

D\u2019Amico further reported that Michael Hage and Kaiden Guhle<\/a> were among the players who drew significant interest from the Blues.<\/p>\n
