A youth hockey camp in Anchorage is getting some help from the NHL this week.<\/p>\n
Members of the Seattle Kraken organization are in Alaska working with young athletes at the Anchorage Hockey Academy Summer Camp.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe look forward to this trip every year,\u201d Seattle Kraken Player Development Coach David Min said.<\/p>\n
Min is one of the Kraken staff members spending time on the ice with campers this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis camp is awesome. There\u2019s lots of energy inside the building and everything is great, so we love being here,\u201d Min said.<\/p>\n
According to organizers, 144 children are participating in this week\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n
The program combines hockey instruction with activities including swimming, soccer, pickleball and frisbee.<\/p>\n
Organizer Kirk Kullberg said the camp is focused on more than just developing hockey players.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust growing the game in general, that\u2019s what I think it\u2019s all about, right? Giving the kids a spot to become better athletes,\u201d Kullberg said.<\/p>\n
Kullberg said the camp also helps keep children active during the summer months.<\/p>\n
\u201cCoaches are actually trained to keep the kids off their phones. If they see them on their phones, they take them,\u201d Kullberg said.<\/p>\n
The camp serves children from a variety of age groups and provides an opportunity to stay active while continuing to develop hockey skills during the offseason.<\/p>\n
Kraken staff members will remain at the camp through the end of the week.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe love coming here to support hockey and growing the game and continuing to grow Kraken fans,\u201d Min said.<\/p>\n
The Anchorage Hockey Academy Summer Camp runs through July 22 at Dempsey Anderson Ice Arena in Anchorage.<\/p>\n
