A major trade nearly came together in the NHL. Zach Werenski blocked a trade that would have sent him to the Dallas Stars, as you probably already knew.

However, the interesting part here is that reporter Elliotte Friedman has now revealed the three players involved in the agreed-upon trade between the Blue Jackets and the Stars.

In short, Dallas was prepared to pay a hefty price.

Defenseman Thomas Harley was part of the return, along with Mavrik Bourque, but Werenski never agreed to waive his clause.

Zach Werenski’s no-movement clause blocks major Stars trade

Werenski exercised his right.

His no-movement clause allowed him to refuse the trade.

It is a reminder of the power players have.

For Dallas, it is a great opportunity that slipped away. The Stars would have added an elite defenseman to their lineup.

Having Zach Werenski and Miro Heiskanen on the same defensive corps would have been absolutely incredible. It is the second case of its kind this summer. Nikita Zadorov also blocked a trade to Edmonton recently.

Yes, players are gaining more and more control over their own destinies in the modern NHL.

Zach Werenski, 28, recorded 81 points in 75 games this season, including 22 goals, earning the prestigious Norris Trophy, awarded to the National Hockey League’s top defenseman.

Previously on Montreal Hockey Fanatics
