An interesting exercise is generating plenty of discussion among Montreal Canadiens fans.<\/p>\n

Well-known player agent David Ettedgui is wondering which players the Canadiens could lose in a future expansion draft.<\/p>\n

And according to him, two names stand out!<\/p>\n

Two players who could be available to Houston or Austin in the next NHL expansion draft.<\/p>\n

Ettedgui is projecting a possible NHL expansion in 2029-30.<\/p>\n

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but there is certainly plenty of smoke surrounding the idea, and all signs point to it happening.<\/p>\n

The concept behind his exercise is an interesting one.<\/p>\n

Building a championship team requires thinking long term.<\/p>\n

Ettedgui put together his own protected list.<\/p>\n

The catch is that the rules force difficult decisions.<\/p>\n

A team can only protect a limited number of quality players.<\/p>\n

As a result, some intriguing names would be left exposed.<\/p>\n

The goaltending situation is especially intriguing.<\/p>\n

The “battle” between Jakub Dobes<\/a> and Fowler could therefore come to an end, at the latest, in 2029 or 2030.<\/p>\n

Whichever goalie loses that battle would be vulnerable, but in this case, he identifies David Reinbacher and Jacob Fowler as the two players who would be available in that expansion draft:<\/p>\n

“In theory, David Reinbacher finds himself unprotected on this list because he will likely play full-time in the NHL by the end of the 2027 season, thus accumulating his three required pro experience years by 2029, which would force him to be protected and put him at risk behind our current top 3…. This three-year delay before that 2029-30 expansion draft will surely put an end to knowing who between Jacob Fowler or Jakub Dobes will be the Habs’ true goaltender of the future.”<\/p>\n

We’ll see whether this expansion actually becomes a reality, but barring a major change in direction, it appears likely to happen, and Kent Hughes will need to plan for it.<\/p>\n
