There are plenty of obvious questions surrounding the Vancouver Canucks<\/a> heading into this season, but sometimes the more interesting ones are hiding a little further down the roster. Filip Chytil<\/a> and Victor Mancini<\/a> aren\u2019t being talked about as franchise-changing players. They probably shouldn\u2019t be. But both could have a much bigger impact on the team than expectations suggest. And in a rebuilding season, those are exactly the kinds of developments that can quietly change the direction of a team.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what makes these two worth watching. Chytil\u2019s biggest question isn\u2019t really talent. It\u2019s whether he can stay healthy long enough to show what he can still do. Mancini\u2019s question is whether Vancouver has written him off a little too quickly after a disappointing first impression. If both players take a step forward, the Canucks could suddenly have more depth, more options and more trade value than they expected.<\/p>\n

Filip Chytil\u2019s Health Could Be a Tipping Point for the Canucks<\/p>\n

Filip Chytil may be one of the most important question marks on the Vancouver roster, and it has very little to do with his talent. The bigger question is whether he can stay healthy<\/a>. He is skating again and planning on making a comeback for the 2026-27 season, which is good news for the player first and the Canucks second. Vancouver has to take the long view with him. If he gets through training camp healthy, there is little reason to think he won\u2019t make the team on talent alone.<\/p>\n

Chytil has already shown that he can help Vancouver when he\u2019s on the ice. Nine points in 27 games isn\u2019t exactly eye-popping, but there were enough positive signs to suggest there\u2019s still a useful NHL player there. His ability to move the puck and create some flow through the lineup gives new head coach Manny Malhotra another option in the top nine. <\/p>\n

Maybe he plays wing. Maybe he eventually gets another opportunity at centre. But all of that becomes secondary if he can\u2019t stay healthy. For Vancouver, Chytil\u2019s availability could change how the entire forward group looks. And that\u2019s where his health becomes a potential tipping point. <\/p>\n

If he stays healthy into the season, his value could begin to change. Suddenly Vancouver isn\u2019t just hoping he can play; the organization could be looking at a player who becomes part of the next stage of the rebuild or turns into a useful trade asset. If the injuries return, the conversation changes completely. His biggest contribution this season might simply be proving that he can stay on the ice.<\/p>\n

Victor Mancini May Be Better Than the Canucks\u2019 First Impression<\/p>\n

I wonder if Vancouver has already judged Victor Mancini too much on the trade that brought him to the Canucks. He was an important piece of the return for J.T. Miller<\/a>, so naturally there were expectations. When Mancini didn\u2019t immediately look like a top-four NHL defenceman, his stock dropped quickly. But that\u2019s probably not a completely fair way to evaluate a player who was a fifth-round pick only a few years ago and has moved through the system at a remarkable pace.<\/p>\n

The thing I keep coming back to is that Mancini has already shown he can make adjustments. He went from being a 159th-overall pick to playing NCAA hockey, then the American Hockey League (AHL), and then surprisingly making the New York Rangers out of camp. That\u2019s a pretty steep climb in a short period of time. <\/p>\n

His first 40 games in Vancouver haven\u2019t been especially impressive, but that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean we\u2019ve seen the finished product. His play with the AHL\u2019s Abbotsford Canucks<\/a> suggests he might have another step in him. Sometimes young defencemen need to hit a wall before they figure out what the next level requires.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s where Mancini could become a much more interesting part of the Canucks\u2019 season than most roster projections suggest. Everyone seems to have him pencilled in as the extra right-side defenceman behind Filip Hronek, Tom Willander and Luke Schenn. But what if Mancini pushes harder than that? <\/p>\n

Vancouver needs him to become a reliable NHL defenceman who can handle more responsibility than expected. If that happens, Mancini suddenly becomes more than just a piece of the Miller trade. He becomes another young player who could help shape the next version of the Canucks\u2019 defence.<\/p>\n

What If It All Goes Right for Vancouver?<\/p>\n

The encouraging thing here is that neither player has to become something they\u2019re not for this to work. Chytil simply needs to stay healthy and show that the player Vancouver saw in flashes is still there. Mancini needs to take another step and establish himself as a dependable NHL defenceman. If those things happen, Vancouver suddenly has more depth than anticipated. And that\u2019s pretty important for a team trying to build something rather than survive another season.<\/p>\n

But what if both things happen at the same time? What if Chytil rebuilds his value while Mancini grows into a legitimate everyday defenceman? Suddenly two players who currently look like question marks become assets. Maybe they help Vancouver win more games.<\/p>\n

Maybe they become pieces of the next Canucks team. Or maybe one of them eventually brings back something useful in a trade. That\u2019s the fun part of a rebuild. Sometimes the biggest developments aren\u2019t the ones you planned for. They\u2019re the ones that show up because a couple of players finally get the chance to prove everybody wrong.<\/p>\n
