{"id":642210,"date":"2026-08-13T14:57:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T14:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/642210\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T14:57:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T14:57:14","slug":"the-search-for-matthew-schaefer-rookie-comps-and-whats-next","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/642210\/","title":{"rendered":"The search for Matthew Schaefer rookie comps \u2014 and what&#8217;s next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Matthew Schaefer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/18\/sports\/matthew-schaefers-long-term-islanders-impact-goes-beyond-stats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rookie year was good enough<\/a> that, in trying to find others to compare it to, there is almost no choice but to loosen the criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of this newsletter was to look at sophomore seasons for defensemen that followed comparable rookie seasons to Schaefer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Except, at least in the post-lockout era \u2014 which is an obvious demarcation point for any relevant comparison \u2014 Schaefer\u2019s rookie season is, just as a matter of course, the best that any defenseman has had. So when you search Stathead for rookie seasons for a defenseman with at least 2,000 minutes played and 50 or more points, his is the only one that shows up.<\/p>\n<p>This is relevant context because in comparing Schaefer to anyone, you are almost always using a lower baseline, at least based on his rookie season.
