{"id":642357,"date":"2026-08-13T19:36:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T19:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/642357\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T19:36:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T19:36:18","slug":"legendary-calgary-flames-broadcaster-peter-maher-dead-at-79","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/642357\/","title":{"rendered":"Legendary Calgary Flames broadcaster Peter Maher dead at 79"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/calgary-flames\/20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/calgary-flames\/20\" target=\"_blank\">Calgary Flames<\/a> announced the passing of longtime radio voice Peter Maher on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He was 79.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A native of Campbellton, NB, Maher spent 33 years calling every Flames games ahead of his retirement at the end of the 2013-2014 season, including the team\u2019s lone Stanley Cup triumph in 1989 and run to the finals in 2004. Maher called 2,954 Flames games by the time he ended his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Maher\u2019s memorable phrases included \u201cYeah, baby!\u201d and \u201cYou can put it in the win column!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Maher was the recipient of the Hockey Hall of Fame\u2019s Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, honouring the best in hockey broadcasters, in 2006. Upon his retirement, the Flames renamed its gondola as the Peter Maher Radio Broadcast Booth in the Scotiabank Saddledome. Flames media also began handing out the Peter Maher Award, given to the Flames player who best reflected Maher\u2019s virtues: \u201cSincerity, Integrity, Dedication and Respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cPeter\u2019s legacy extends well beyond the broadcast booth,\u201d the team said in a statement. \u201cHe was a passionate ambassador for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/calgary-flames\/20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/calgary-flames\/20\" target=\"_blank\">Calgary Flames<\/a>, a devoted member of the community and a person whose warmth, generosity and love for the game touched countless lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He also called games outside of his Flames work, including Canada\u2019s run at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Calgary Flames announced the passing of longtime radio voice Peter Maher on Thursday.
