A Florida panther kitten found abandoned by her mother at eight weeks old has found a new home at the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens<\/a> in Sanford.<\/p>\n

Now weighing 36 pounds and showing \u201cstrong development and resilience,\u201d the kitten has overcome remarkable odds with the help of human intervention.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the kitten was discovered in the wild and closely monitored by biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as part of panther conservation efforts. At eight weeks old, the kitten had been abandoned by her mother and it was determined she could not survive on her own.<\/p>\n

When it became clear the mother would not return, the kitten was rescued on March 9 and transported to the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens<\/a>, where a team of animal care specialists provided critical care.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis story is a reminder of how challenging life can be for Florida panthers, particularly for young kittens that lose the protection of their mothers,\u201d said Dr. Peter Sebastian<\/a>, veterinarian with the FWC, in a news release. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful she received the specialized care she needed at the Naples Zoo, and we\u2019re pleased that her journey at the Central Florida Zoo will help raise awareness about Florida panthers and the importance of conserving their habitat.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of her rescue, the kitten weighed less than three pounds and was in \u201cfragile condition, including a high parasite load and significant signs of malnourishment,\u201d according to a news release. Naples Zoo teams worked on rehabilitating her with nutrition, medical treatment and constant monitoring.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer recovery is a testament to the dedication of our veterinary and animal care teams,\u201d said Dr. Carson Rehn<\/a>, veterinarian associate at Naples Zoo, in a news release. \u201cWe\u2019re proud to have played a role in giving her a second chance and are thrilled she will continue her journey at Central Florida Zoo, where she can inspire others to protect Florida panthers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The panther was named Peppercorn by the team at Naples Zoo for her \u201cspicy but small nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the Central Florida Zoo, the now 7-month-old panther will highlight the need for conservation in Florida.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Central Florida Zoo is honored to provide her a safe, permanent home where she will not only thrive under expert care, but also help inspire guests to understand why protecting Florida\u2019s native wildlife and wild spaces is so important,\u201d said Richard Glover, CEO of the Central Florida Zoo, in a news release. \u201cWe are also thankful to the FWC and the dedicated team at Naples Zoo for the extraordinary care they provided. Her journey is a powerful reminder of both the vulnerability and resilience of Florida panthers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Florida panthers remain one of the most endangered mammals in the United States with only an estimated 120-230 adult panthers remaining<\/a>. The Florida Wildlife Corridor<\/a>, an 18 million-acre network of public lands, presents an ongoing land conservation effort to expand critical habitat for the Florida panther. The effort was highlighted in the 2022 documentary, \u201cPath of the Panther<\/a>,\u201d which shares an intimate look into the lives of these magnificent mammals.<\/p>\n

In the realm of big cats, the Central Florida Zoo is home to two cheetahs, an Amur leopard and two cougar cubs from South Dakota that arrived at the zoo at 10 weeks old earlier this summer. The cougars have yet to make their public debut.<\/p>\n
