The Vancouver Canucks<\/a> are heading into a season in which there are plenty of questions about what this team can become. The roster has changed, the expectations have changed, and the organization is trying to figure out how to move forward in its rebuild. That makes the little things worth watching. Sometimes the most useful information about a team isn\u2019t found in the standings or even the traditional statistics. Sometimes it is found in the way individual players actually play the game.<\/p>\n

NHL EDGE recently highlighted several Canucks players<\/a> whose underlying skills stand out around the league. Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson can shoot the puck with considerable velocity, Jake DeBrusk has established himself as a dangerous player around the net, and Filip Hronek is one of the league\u2019s biggest skating workhorses. None of that guarantees success, of course. But it raises an interesting question about Vancouver: can the Canucks put those strengths together and become a better team?<\/p>\n

Canucks Need More From Their Proven Scorers<\/p>\n

Brock Boeser<\/a> and Elias Pettersson don\u2019t need much introduction to Canucks fans, but it is worth remembering what makes both players dangerous. Boeser remains one of the better shooters in the league, while Pettersson combines a dangerous shot with the ability to create offence from different areas of the ice. Their NHL EDGE numbers simply reinforce something Vancouver already knows. These are players who should be capable of driving offensive play when they are healthy and confident.<\/p>\n

The bigger issue for Vancouver is getting enough out of that ability. The Canucks need Boeser and Pettersson scoring goals. They need more nights when the puck is finding its way onto their sticks in dangerous situations, and they need the rest of the lineup to help make that happen. If Vancouver can spend less time asking its top offensive players to manufacture everything themselves and more time getting them into positions where their skills matter, the results could look considerably different.<\/p>\n

Jake DeBrusk<\/a> fits into that conversation slightly differently. His strength isn\u2019t shooting the puck from distance. He has shown the ability to get into high-danger areas where goals come more easily, and he has become an important part of Vancouver\u2019s power play<\/a>. That could make him especially important this season.<\/p>\n

If Boeser and Pettersson are able to create more opportunities and DeBrusk continues to get to the net, Vancouver has the ingredients for a much more dangerous attack. The question is whether the Canucks can consistently turn those individual strengths into team offence.<\/p>\n

Filip Hronek Is Being Asked to Carry More Than His Share<\/p>\n

Then there is Filip Hronek, and his NHL EDGE profile tells a different story. Hronek isn\u2019t simply playing a lot of minutes. He is covering a tremendous amount of ice while contributing at both ends of the rink. He averaged 25 minutes per game last season, and after Quinn Hughes was traded to the Minnesota Wild, that workload became even more significant. Vancouver is now asking Hronek to become one of the pillars of its defence rather than simply an important piece alongside its superstar defenceman.<\/p>\n

That creates an opportunity, but it also creates a warning sign<\/a>. Hronek can skate, move the puck and get his shot through from the point, but there is only so much one defenceman can do. If Vancouver simply gives him more minutes, that probably won\u2019t work. If the Canucks instead use Hronek\u2019s skating and puck-moving ability to help establish a different defensive structure, they may be able to get considerably more out of him without simply wearing him down.<\/p>\n

That may be the bigger takeaway from the NHL EDGE report. Vancouver has players with some very specific NHL-level strengths. Boeser can shoot, Pettersson can shoot and create, DeBrusk can get to dangerous areas, and Hronek can cover enormous amounts of ice while playing in every situation. The challenge for the Canucks isn\u2019t discovering what these players do well. They already know that. The challenge is building a team that allows those strengths to matter more often.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Next for the Canucks?<\/p>\n

That may be the real story heading into the season. Vancouver isn\u2019t short on individual ability, but the team has to turn that ability into something coherent. Losing Hughes changes the defence, while the offensive players need to find ways to create more consistently. The NHL EDGE numbers don\u2019t predict where the Canucks will finish, but they do provide some clues about where this roster can still be dangerous. The numbers aren\u2019t the story. What Vancouver does with them will be.<\/p>\n

For Vancouver, the hope has to be that these aren\u2019t just interesting numbers on a scouting report. They are indications of what the Canucks can become. If Boeser and Pettersson are healthy and productive, DeBrusk continues to win battles around the net, and Hronek handles his expanded role without being overwhelmed by it, the Canucks could have more to work with than the outside expectations suggest. <\/p>\n
