That’s understandable. Fans want an immediate answer. Who got the better player? Who got the better prospects? Who will regret the deal?

But the Quinn Hughes trade is one of those deals where the real answer probably won’t arrive for several years. That’s particularly true from the Vancouver Canucks‘ perspective.

Hughes is an established star and one of the best defensemen in the NHL, so there is no pretending Vancouver received a player who could step in and replace him. The more interesting question is whether the Canucks received enough young talent and potential to eventually make the organization better than it was before the trade.

The Return Was Bigger Than One Player

In the December 2025 blockbuster, the Canucks traded Hughes to the Minnesota Wild for centre Marco Rossi, defenceman Zeev Buium, winger Liam Öhgren and Minnesota’s first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Vancouver used that pick to select forward Adam Novotny.

One thing about the reaction stood out. Plenty of attention has been paid to Buium and the draft pick, but as a reader pointed out yesterday, Rossi deserves more attention than he sometimes gets in the discussion. He’s still young enough that his best hockey could be ahead of him. If Rossi develops into the player some people believe he can become, he could eventually be one of the most important pieces of the Hughes trade.

Vancouver Canucks forward Marco Rossi (Bob Frid-Imagn Images)

That’s what makes this kind of deal difficult to judge. Vancouver didn’t trade Hughes for one player. Management traded him for a collection of players who are at very different points in their development.

Buium Doesn’t Have to Be Hughes

Then there is Buium. The temptation is to compare him directly with Hughes, but that’s the wrong way to look at it. Hughes is a special player, and expecting Buium to become another 70- or 80-point defenseman isn’t particularly fair.

Buium doesn’t have to replace Hughes. He needs to become Buium. If he develops into a top-pair defenseman with a different skill set, Vancouver can still come out of this with something very valuable. Sometimes replacing a star isn’t about finding another version of the same player. It’s about changing what the team can be.

That’s an important distinction. The Canucks aren’t going to find another Hughes sitting on the shelf. They may, however, be able to build a better overall team with several players who fill different roles.

The Draft Pick Could Matter Too

And then there is Novotny. He’s the hardest piece of the trade to evaluate because he’s a draft pick who may be several years away from telling us what he really is. But that’s also what makes first-round picks so valuable in a trade like this. They provide another opportunity to find a player who can grow with the rest of the group.

Adam Novotny, Vancouver Canucks (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers)

Vancouver doesn’t need every piece of the Hughes return to become a star. If Rossi becomes a significant NHL player, Buium develops into a top-pair defenseman, Öhgren becomes a legitimate middle-six contributor, and Novotny develops into something special, the Hughes trade could look very different in hindsight. Maybe this wasn’t simply a good return. Maybe, in time, it will prove to be a franchise-changing one.

The Real Test Comes Later

The Hughes trade was always going to be judged against the player Vancouver lost. That’s unavoidable. But a better way to judge it is to ask what kind of team these young players allow the Canucks to build.

If several of these players become important contributors, Vancouver won’t have replaced Hughes with one player. It will have turned one superstar into several opportunities to build a deeper team. And that may ultimately be the most interesting part of this trade. A blockbuster involving an established star gives us something we can measure immediately. The return often gives us something we can’t.

Potential. The fun of all this is that fans get to watch the Canucks spend the next few years finding out how much of that potential they actually bought.

Free Newsletter

Get Vancouver Canucks coverage delivered to your inbox

In-depth analysis, breaking news, and insider takes – free.

Subscribe Free →

In blockbuster trades, there is a tendency to decide who won and who lost before anyone has had…

[5128
627,894,5,798,1486,4,893,27,5313,1289
post-657599","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vancouver-canucks","tag-adam-novotny","tag-canucks","tag-hockey","tag-liam-ohgren","tag-marco-rossi","tag-nhl","tag-vancouver","tag-vancouver-canucks","tag-vancouvercanucks","tag-zeev-buium
["GET
