\t\t\t\t\tPending unrestricted free agent Mitch Marner<\/a> has reportedly changed his mind and is willing to work with the Maple Leafs on a sign-and-trade to a heated rival.This past week the Leafs received some clarity<\/a> from Mitch Marner and his camp, indicating that he will be heading to free agency, but that he hasn’t fully closed the door on a return to Toronto.Previously, the belief was that Marner had intended leave the Leafs empty-handed<\/a>, not willing to work with the club on a potential sign-and-trade scenario to allow GM Brad Treliving to recoup any assets on his way out.<\/p>\n

Mitch Marner Reportedly Willing to do a Sign-and-Trade Deal<\/p>\n

“There’s real smoke that the Florida Panthers could be gearing up to make a run at Marner. Word is that Toronto has opened the door to a sign-and-trade scenario, where they ink Marner to a max-term extension (eight years) and then flip him to recoup some level of value,” wrote Robinson following this week’s draft combine.<\/p>\n

While trading Marner to a division rival is not ideal for the Leafs, it would allow them to recoup some assets and potentially get a head start in negotiations with Matthew Knies<\/a> and John Tavares<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Regardless, if Marner is open to a sign-and-trade, it will show that he truly does care about the Leafs organization and will give them a parting gift while leaving a better legacy than failing to show up in the post-season series against Florida and then walking away free and clear.<\/p>\n
