It’s quite fitting that eleven years after joining the Ottawa Senators organization, Thomas Chabot, the longest-serving member currently on the team, is named the 11th captain in franchise history.<\/p>\n
Drafted with the 18th pick of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Chabot quickly rose to become one of the most valuable players in the organization, taking on the grueling role of a minute-munching, top-pairing defenceman for a rebuilding team. With the addition of Jake Sanderson, Chabot has transitioned into a second-pairing role, while acting as a mentor to the entire blueline and a well-respected leader on the ice and in the locker room.<\/p>\n
Entering his 10th season with the Senators, the 29-year-old Chabot ranks 13th in games played for the franchise with 569, while also ranking 13th in points with 335, third in blueliners behind Erik Karlsson and Wade Redden. He will become eligible for a new contract on July 1st, 2027, which should be one of the most straightforward negotiations in recent history, a seven-year deal that will take him to 38 years of age.<\/p>\n
The news comes only a couple of days after the birth of his and his wife Marion’s first child, who was present for the official announcement in the Sens’ locker room.<\/p>\n
