One of them was addressed by acquiring JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth for two first-round draft pick.

One need that wasn’t addressed is the need for a top-six center. Instead, the Bruins and Sweeney are running it back with the same group that finished last season: Elias Lindholm, Pavel Zacha, Fraser Minten, and Sean Kuraly. They also still have Matthew Poitras, but he’s on injured reserve.

If the Black and Gold are going to be a team that makes the Stanley Cup Playoffs next spring, there needs to be an upgrade down the middle at center. Every day that passes without a contract extension for Zacha, the cracks open a little more that it isn’t going to happen with Boston, and a trade could be incoming, or they risk losing him for nothing in free agency.

Sweeney will have options if some players become available to add down the middle. If the Winnipeg Jets make Mark Scheifele available, Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report listed four potential landing spots for Scheifele, with the Bruins being one of them.

Bruins are named as the landing spot for Jets center Mark Scheifele if he becomes available

Gretz’s four landing spots are the Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Bruins. If we’re being honest, the Bruins are likely going to be linked to most of the top pivots that become available.

“The Bruins almost certainly still see themselves as a playoff team, and a team that is capable of contending. But there is always going to be a ceiling on what they can do without a true No. 1 center on the roster. It would not solve all of their problems, but it would solve a big problem,” wrote Gretz.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Bruins think they’re a playoff team, and it would make sense that they believe they are a contender, considering their core of David Pastrnak, Jeremy Swayman, and Charlie McAvoy are all in their prime. It would be in Sweeney’s best interest to consider adding a player like Scheifele to increase their odds of contending.

However, if we look at Sweeney’s history of striking big for a player like Scheifele in-season, it’s not very good. Could there be a deal that involved Zacha as part of a package to Winnipeg for Scheifele? Maybe.

Scheifele has five years remaining on his current deal that carries an AAV of $8.5 million, which, with the salary cap going up, is a deal that would look very good on anyone’s books. For the Bruins, that’s a deal worth taking on.

If the Bruins are content with just making the playoffs, then it’s unlikely Sweeney looks to strike big this season, especially to address a need down the middle. If he’s serious about contending in a loaded Eastern Conference, then making a move for a player of Scheifele’s caliber is something he should seriously consider.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

Entering the 2026 offseason, Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney had some big needs.
