Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin was surprised to hear Montreal Canadiens fans chanting his name at the Bell Centre on Saturday night.

The chants erupted during Detroit’s NHL game against Montreal on Oct. 10. Canadiens supporters repeatedly shouted “We Want Larkin,” fueling speculation about the center’s future amid ongoing trade rumors.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Larkin admitted he never expected that reaction in Montreal.

“It was interesting. I never would’ve imagined that in this building in my career,” Larkin said.

He praised the Canadiens’ supporters while explaining how he handled the unexpected attention.

“But they’re passionate fans. In my opinion, it’s the best atmosphere in hockey, and they’re knowledgeable, and they love their team, and that’s how I read into it,” Larkin added. “And after a few seconds, it was just back to focusing on the game.”

The chants carry added significance because Larkin reportedly requested a trade during the 2026 offseason. The longtime Detroit forward also relinquished his captaincy ahead of the 2026-27 season.

However, any potential move remains complicated by his full no-trade clause. Larkin controls his destination, meaning Montreal’s interest and fan enthusiasm alone cannot secure a deal.

The 30-year-old remains a proven offensive contributor. He recorded 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games last season, making him an attractive target for teams seeking top-six scoring.

Montreal could benefit from adding an established center, but acquiring Larkin would require significant financial and roster considerations. His eight-year, $69.6 million contract carries an $8.7 million annual cap hit through 2030-31.

The Canadiens ultimately won Saturday’s contest 1-0 in a shootout, with Jacob Fowler making 30 saves in regulation. The result gave Montreal another reason to celebrate beyond the unusual reception for Larkin.

For Detroit, the chants highlight the growing attention surrounding its unsettled star. Larkin’s reaction, however, offered no indication that he intends to choose Montreal. His comments remained respectful toward the crowd, while his future continues to depend on decisions beyond one memorable night at the Bell Centre.
